Father, son arrested for attacking ambulance driver

A father and son were arrested in Dordrecht on Thursday after they assaulted an ambulance driver, the Dordrecht police said on Facebook. According to the police, the men did not agree with the paramedics wanting to take a woman to the hospital.

The ambulance responded to Rigelhof in Sterrenburg to help a woman. The paramedics determined that she had to go to the hospital, against the will of her husband and son. After the woman was loaded into the ambulance, and the ambulance was about to leave, the father and son attacked the driver.

According to Jaco van Wingerden, spokesperson for the ambulance service Zuid-Holland Zuid, the driver is very upset. "The physical injuries aren't serious, but he was completely overwhelmed." he said to newspaper AD. According to him, the Dordrecht ambulance service rarely deals with violence directed at employees. "We can't remember such a thing happening. Last year we had two cases of verbal violence, that's all." The incident hit hard, he said. "Not only the victim, but also his colleagues. We are a small, tight team."

The father and son were immediately arrested and are in custody. "Violence against emergency workers is unacceptable and we will fight it with all possible means", the police said on Facebook.
