Three people, including two children aged 8 and 12 years, were killed in an apparent murder-suicide in a home on Heimerstein in Dordrecht on Monday evening. The suspected gunman was their father, a 35-year-old police officer who worked at the Rotterdam unit. He also died. A 28-year-old woman was critically injured, the police said in a statement.

31 mayors of larger Dutch cities are calling on the Senate not to remove the appointment of mayors from the Dutch constitution, and to keep the procedure as is. Removing the appointment procedure from the constitution is the first step in enabling an elected mayor. The mayors are worried that this will result in them losing their connecting role as "father or mother for all residents, businesses and institutions", they wrote in an open letter to the Senate, the Volkskrant reports.

Marcel S. was sentenced to 12 years in prison and institutionalized psychiatric treatment for the death of his 10-year-old son Diego. The court in Rotterdam considered it proven that the 39-year-old man strangled his son to death in anger after his wife left him and convicted him of manslaughter, ANP reports.

Two animals were killed in an explosion at the Animal Ambulance office in Dordrecht during the early hours of Saturday morning. The owner of the building called it a "failed attack" - she's been harassed on social media and over the phone for some time, she said to RTV Rijnmond.

Local residents heard a loud bang around 1:40 a.m. on Saturday. Twelve animals, including rabbits, birds and chinchillas, were in the building at the time. Two rabbits were killed. They probably died from shock, owner Hannie, who asked that her surname not be revealed, said to the broadcaster.

A mother made use of a foundling room in the Netherlands. The mother could not care for her child due to her living conditions and left the baby in a foundling room shortly after giving birth. The child was placed with a foster family, RTL Nieuws reports.

For privacy reasons, the child's gender and which foundling room was used will not be revealed. As foundation Beschermde Wieg, who manages the founding rooms, is based in Dordrecht, Dordrecht mayor Wouter Kolff named the baby and registered the child at the Dordrecht registry office.

Ten year old Diego, who was found murdered in his father's home in Dordrecht last year, wrote a letter before he died, his father's lawyer revealed in court on Thursday. Father Marcel S. is suspected of killing the boy, AD reports.

Diego's body was found in his father's house on Jan Vethkade in March last year. He was strangled to death. The letter was found in the garden of that same house, the lawyer said.

The police arrested a 14-year-old boy from Dordrecht on Monday night on suspicion of involvement in two attacks on gay men in the town over the weekend.

Both victims were attacked shortly after meeting up with someone for a date made on dating app Grindr. The first victim was assaulted on Smitsweg during the early hours of Saturday morning. The second man managed to get away from his attackers on Schenkeldijk early on Sunday morning.

Two gay men were attacked in Dordrecht over the weekend shortly after meeting someone on a date made on dating app Grindr. One victim had to go to hospital for treatment. The second managed to flee before being injured. The police believe the men may have been attacked due to their sexual orientation and are investigating whether the two incidents are connected.

Geert Wilders and his PVV won city council seats seats in each one of the 30 municipalities the party participated in during the municipal elections on Wednesday. In total the PVV currently stands on 74 seats, the Volkskrant reports.

During the previous municipal elections four years ago, the PVV only participated in two municipalities - Almere and The Hague. The party got fewer seats in those two municipalities this time around. In Almere the party dropped from nine to seven seats, and in The Hague from seven to two seats.

The police fired warning shots while arresting a 36-year-old man in Dordrecht on Sunday evening. He is suspected of falsely reporting a threat to the Turkish embassy in The Hague. No one was injured, AD reports.

Around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday the man called the embassy and said that two people are planning an attack at the embassy, the police said, according to the newspaper. The police decided not to take any risks, and deployed extra security to the embassy while investigators tracked down the person who made the call.

The Public Prosecutor demanded 200 hours of community service against two men and a woman suspected of attacking a mosque in Dordrecht in 2016. Should they fail to do their community service, they should go to jail for 100 hours, the Prosecutor demanded, RTL Nieuws reports.

A group of 15 people vandalized the mosque on June 23rd, 2016, after a Kursidh family in the Wielwijk neighborhood was threatened. The family hung a Kurdish flag outside their house for a short time after their daughter passed her final exams. They were threatened, and a stone was thrown through their window.

The police arrested four people on the A16 near Dordrecht on Thursday evening after receiving a report about someone firing a gun from a car. The shots were fired on the A20 highway, and the suspects arrested on the A16, a police spokesperson confirmed to NU.nl.

The suspects were arrested in a vehicle with Belgian license plates. The police used the dangerous suspects technique to approach them, as there was a chance that they had a firearm. Whether a gun was found, is not yet clear.

The A16 towards Breda was closed off completely during the arrest.

The locks of the Sinterklaas home in Dordrecht were sabotaged by activists over night. A metallic substance and glue were found in the locks, making the doors difficult to open. Stickers reading 'Zwarte Piet is racism' were stuck on the building, NOS reports. 

According to the VVV, the organization responsible for the Sinterklaas home, the damage is not too bad. All stickers were removed before the home opened to its public, which mostly consists of school children. The Sinterklaas house is a municipal building where Sinterklaas 'lives'.

Due to municipal budget cuts, the institution has to provide the same care with fewer and fewer people, and the situation is unsustainable, Van Eerd said.

This is partly thanks to the fact that electric cars are becoming more affordable, ANP reports.

Traces of the potentially carcinogenic substance GenX were found in the tap water of The Hague, Zoetermeer and Leiden, water company Dunea announced on Tuesday. The company stresses that the concentrations are very low and that the drinking water is still safe, AD reports.

An increasing number of Dutch prisons are taking part in an experiment in which certain prisoners are given more freedom of movement and responsibility. The idea is to prod prisoners into becoming more self-sufficient. But the prison guards are worried that the experiment is only giving the detainees more freedom to conduct their criminal business within the prison walls, they said to newspaper AD.
