Dutch kids are still among the happiest in Europe and tend to have a good relationship with their parents, but more are experiencing pressure from their school work, according to a study by Utrecht University, the Trimbos institute and SCP. The researchers also found that the majority of 16-year-olds drink alcohol despite being underage, and that condom use is declining, NOS reports.
Dutch 15-year-olds are happy with their lives and perform well in school and sports, according to a three yearly study by te Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) which Education State Secretary Sander Dekker sent to parliament on Wednesday. Dutch teens give their lives an average score of 7.8, putting the Netherlands in second place for life satisfaction in a list of 35 countries from around the world. Finland came in first, Switzerland came in third.
One in 15 Dutch teens (6.4 percent) sent a sexual photo to someone else on social media at least once, according to a survey by Bureau Jeugd & Media among a thousand kids aged between 12 and 17 years, NOS reports.
Sexting, sharing sexually explicit photos via social media, is especially popular among 16 and 17 year olds, the survey found. In this age group 14.5 percent have sent a sexual photo at least once. 40 percent said that they've received requests for naked photos of themes elves. Teens send these photos to their friends, but often also to people they only know online.
Two Dutch teenagers were stopped in Turkey over the weekend while they were apparently on their way to Syria. The young girls were picked up in Istanbul before being transported back to the Netherlands, broadcaster Nos reported.
