Dozens of homes in the Zuid-Holland town of 's-Gravenzande were damaged by a tornado on Thursday. Roof tiles were blown off, windows shattered and trees were blown over. The tornado lasted around 25 seconds, according to the Telegraaf.
Nearly 40 percent of Dutch employees live and work in the same municipality, according to figures for 2015 Statistics Netherlands published on Thursday. The average Dutch worker work 22.6 kilometers from their home. Workers in the big cities and people living on the outskirts of the Netherlands, such as on the Wadden Islands, in particular tend to live where they work, NU.nl reports.
The number of welfare recipients in the Netherlands increased by 4 percent last year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Tuesday. At the end of December 2016 the Netherlands counted a total of 467 thousand welfare recipients, 18 thousand more than December 2015.
The growth can mainly be attributed to non-Western immigrants, particularly asylum seekers who were given refugee status in the Netherlands last year. After being given a residency permits, refugees can apply for welfare.
No Islamic primary school will be opening in Naaldwijk in Westland. While the municipality approved the plans for the school, State Secretary Sander Dekker of Education decided not to give his permission. According to him, the plan for the school does not meet all the conditions, NOS reports.
A very critical report on the asbestos cleanup in Wateringen after a large fire in January last year, was leaked on Wednesday. The investigators concluded that the the municipality of Westland unnecessarily exposed residents to severe health risks by not cleaning up the asbestos properly after the fire. One investigator even calls it "a deadly health risk"
Residents living near a paint and wallpaper warehouse in Wateringen, Zuid-Holland are advised to stay indoors after the warehouse burnt down late Monday night. Residents of two hundred houses should not go to school or work today because of the asbestos released in the fire, confirms Jaqueline den Brabander, the spokesperson for the Westland municipality told NRC.
