Within a year the packaging of cigarettes and tobacco must consist of at least 65 percent of warning texts and pictures of all kinds of distasteful conditions that you get from smoking. There must also be an age restriction of 18 years for the sale of electronic cigarettes.

Union FNV Zorg & Welzijn (FNV Care & Welfare) has filed a complaint with the Advertising Code Commission regarding a number of commercials of the Ministry of Health. The union thinks that the videos about the changes and cutbacks in healthcare are misleading.

According to a new study, there is no evidence that young people will perform worse because of alcohol use. A long-term study of 2,230 Dutch adolescents shows that drinkers perform no worse than non-drinkers when it comes to memory, impulse control and concentration.

Long-term care for the elderly and disabled is to be redeveloped. Yesterday the Senate approved the Act long-term care (Wet langdurige zorg - Wlz) which guarantees assistance for people who need 24 hours a day care.

Nursing homes that do not offer proper care for the elderly, will have to deal with sharper inspection supervision. Directors of institutions that repeatedly provide poor care, will be addressed earlier. If there are no improvements, another health care institution will take over.

Ben Oude Nijhuis, the man who denounced the quality of healthcare institutions in The Hague earlier this month on Pauw, has died at the age of 82. He was in the broadcast with State Secretary Martin van Rijn of Public Health.

Many municipalities in The Netherlands do not seem ready to take over youth care, or child welfare, tasks from the government next year, under the new municipal tasks reorganization. According to a letter to Parliament from State Secretaries Martin van Rijn (Health, Welfare and Sport) and Fred Teeven (Security and Justice), the Cabinet will examine these municipalities.

It is expected that of al the Dutch older than 15, 25% or even slightly less will smoke this year. This was stated by State Secretary Martin van Rijn, during a debate on smoking in the House.

In 2012 the number of smokers was 26%. This were a total of 3.6 million people. Although a decrease of 1% doesn’t look that big, counted in number of people it is a considerable number of people who quit smoking.

With a new bill the government wants to enforce a total smoking ban. Until now, there was an exception for sole proprietors, since they have no staff who can be affected by the smoke. The government now wants to include the single proprietors in the ban but the question remains whether they will succeed.
