Police in Enschede arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of burglary after he was found in the middle of the night by a three-year-old boy. The boy awoke late Monday night to the sound of loud footsteps in the garden behind his house.

“He thought there were maybe animals or monsters there. However, it was a wild, strange man,” police said in a statement.

Authorities praised the boy for alerting his mother to the suspicious person. She saw he was carrying a television and an electric bike and quickly called emergency services.

A Dutch woman was shot in the face during a robbery while on vacation in Madagascar over the weekend. The bullet used turned out to be composed of corn and scrap. "If there had been a real bullet in that gun, my wife would be dead now", husband Tim Doelman said to the Telegraaf.

The student campuses in Amsterdam are not safe, student union ASVA warns. The union received 39 reports of incidents over the last two months alone, mainly involving incidents of violence, sexual offenses, robbery and burglary, AD reports.

A large part of these reports came from the Spinoza Campus and the nearby apartment buildings Echtenstein and Bergwijkdreef in Amsterdam Zuidoost. Students also feel unsafe at the campus on the NDSM wharf, according to ASVA.

A jeweler in Kesteren, Gelderland, was robbed by three armed people on Thursday morning. The owner of the jewelry store was injured. The police arrested one suspect, and launched a manhunt for the other two, the Telegraaf reports.

A bystander managed to grab one of the robbers when he came running out of the jewelry store, according to the newspaper. The police arrested the man. Multiple pieces of jewelry were found lying on the street.

The other two robbers fled on a scooter. They were wearing dark clothing.

After five consecutive years of consistent decrease, the number of crimes registered in the Netherlands increased in the first quarter of 2019. In the first three months of this year, 5 percent more crimes were registered than in the first quarter of 2018, according to figures the police released on Monday.

Multiple shots were fired during a jewelry store robbery on Parkstraat in Breda on Wednesday. A staff member of the store sustained a head injury, though the police told NU.nl that the employee was not hit by a bullet. 

The robbery was committed by four armed persons at around 11:00 a.m., according to the newspaper. Afterwards the robbers were driven away in a passenger car. The car was later found in a parking lot on Nieuwe Ginnekenstraat, a few streets away from the store.

On Tuesday the court in The Hague sentenced a 44-year-old man to 20 years in prison for brutally robbing and murdering 85-year-old Ans van der Meer from The Hague in 2017. His 35-year-old partner was sentenced to nine months in prison for laundering the loot, NU.nl reports.

Friends found the elderly woman dead in her flat in Loosduinen in June 2017. She had been severely beaten. Her sternum was broken, as was her thoracic vertebra, nine ribs and nose. The woman died from suffocation.

Amsterdam is still the city in the Netherlands with the highest crime figures, according to newspaper AD's annual crime monitor Misdaadmeter. Neighboring municipality Diemen is catching up to the Dutch capital, moving from the 26th most unsafe municipality in 2017 to the 8th last year. Limburg counts four municipalities in the top 10 least safe, AD reports.

A 4-year-old girl witnessed three robbers assault her father in their home in Drouwenerveen, Drenthe late on Sunday evening. The robbers were dressed as a police SWAT team, the police said on Opsporing Verzocht on Tuesday.

The father, a 38-year-old man, was seriously injured and is still in hospital. He was in the living room with his daughter when the robbers forced the front door and came into their home. Care was arranged for the girl. The robbery made a big impression on her, the police said.

Continuing the trend of past years, the number of registered crimes in the Netherlands dropped in 2018. The police registered a total of 766,638 crimes, a decrease of 6.1 percent compared to 2017. However, the police note that the decrease is slowing down. "The decline seems to have come to an end in the last six months", the police said.

Jewelry thieves made off with 1.3 million euros of luxury watches in a brazen smash-and-grab robbery in the center of Maastricht Wednesday night. Two burglars made off with 150 watches from the Juwelier Burger on Platielstraat, and were apparently at large.

A video was posted on Facebook claiming to show the end of the burglary. Two people are scene climbing down a ladder at the scene of the crime, and then fleeing on bicycles.

So far Rabobank paid out 7 million euros to victims of a safety deposit box robbery in Oudenbosch in March. That means that around 60 percent of the victims have been compensated. The bank expects to reach 90 percent in March, Omroep Brabant reports.

Two men robbed a Blokker store on Eerste Oosterparkstraat in Amsterdam on Saturday morning. During the robbery the perpetrators threatened employees and a number of customers, including a small child. The police are looking for the perpetrators and asking for the public's help to find them.

One person was killed in robbery at a Chinese-Indian restaurant in Drenthe and a subsequent car crash on Thursday. The car crashed into a low wall on Kaaplaantje at around 10:00 p.m., shortly after the robbery. One of the people in the car was killed, the other seriously injured, RTV Drenthe reports.

The car crashed into a low wall of parking garage De Kaap. The parking garage is located right behind the robbed restaurant.

Someone stole a large amount of cocaine from a police lockup in Curacao. The drugs had previously been confiscated by the police. The theft from the police terrain was discovered on Sunday morning at around 9:00 a.m., NOS reports.

The perpetrators forced two large metal doors to get to the drugs. Exactly how much cocaine was stolen, the Public Prosecutor on Curacao would not to say to NOS.

Later on Sunday a burning truck was found on the island. The police believe it may have been used in the robbery.

An armed robbery at bungalow park De Witte Wieven in Nunspeet sent large numbers of police officers searching the surrounding woods on Thursday night. No one was injured. According to the police, there were two or three suspects and two people were arrested, NOS reports.

A SWAT team, police dogs, a helicopter and multiple police vehicles responded to the bungalow park on Thursday night. A large part of the holiday park, which consists of a few hundred bungalows, was closed down for the search and investigation.

An elderly couple were locked into the basement when robbers forced their way into their home in Susteren during the early hours of Monday morning. Zischa Vergooszen (77) managed to open the wooden cellar door by hacking at it for hours with a small knife, while her husband Gerard (82) lay seriously injured on the floor. Their family offered a reward of 5 thousand euros for the tip that leads to the robbers' arrest, 1Limburg reports.

Three men in police uniforms robbed a home on Dok in Zaandam at around 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday. The police are looking for witnesses.

The resident of the home opened the door when three apparent police officers knocked during the early hours of Tuesday morning. They forced their way inside, threatened the man with a firearm and tied him up.

The other resident of the home was upstairs at that time. She managed to flee outside and call for help.

The robbers stole money and jewelry before running off.

The police released surveillance camera footage of a robbery in Jack's Casino in Nijmegen in March this year. A 78-year-old woman was robbed shortly after winning a bingo jackpot at the casino, De Gelderlander reports.

The robbery happened at the casino on Houtstraat on March 10th. The video shows a man sneaking the woman's wallet out of her jacket while she was playing on a slot machine. He walks away, empties the wallet, and then comes back to put the empty wallet back in the woman's jacket.

The police in Doetinchem arrested 11 people between the ages of 16 and 25 years on suspicion of a large number of criminal activities ranging from violent robberies to online fraud. The arrests formed part of a large-scale raid involving some 70 police officers, the police said in a statement on Tuesday.

The detainees are suspected of, among other things, violent robberies, assault and attempts thereto, public violence, extortion, fraud, possession of stolen items, and threatening victims and witnesses.
