The Dutch government is allocating an annual 80 million euros a year for culture education, according to the memorandum Culture in an open society that Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven of Education, Culture and Science presented on Monday. Her ambition is to make sure that the cultural sector "flourishes", NOS reports.

The power is still out in Amsterdam Centrum. Liander hopes to have it restored around 3:15 p.m., the grid manager says on Twitter. Two people were injured when the power went out. A hit cable caused a large flame on Weteringschans. One man sustained burns, and the other was also near the flame, the local safety office said to NU.nl.

The victims were taken to hospital. Both were conscious and speaking, and their injuries don't seem to be too serious, according to the safety office.

Amsterdam city center is facing a power outage on Friday morning. Several buildings, including the Rijksmuseum, were evacuated, Het Parool reports.

The artworks are not in danger, because a generator ensures safety, a spokesperson for the Rijksmuseum said to the newspaper. The rooms are dark however, so visitors were evacuated.

The Van Gogh Museum closed 2017 with a new record of 2.26 million visitors, which makes it the most visitors in the Netherlands. "This milestone shows that Van Gogh still inspires an uncountable number of people from the whole world. That is fantastic", Axel Rüger, director of the museum, told Het Parool.

There was also an increase of almost four percent in the number of people in possession of the Museumkaart in 2017. Sone 1.35 million people now have a Museumkaart and the cards were used a total of 8.7 million times, an average of 6.6 times per person.

The painting scanner used by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam to analyze masterpieces may also help police detectives find trace evidence in present-day crime scenes. The investigators of the Dutch Forensic Institute (NFI) and the national art gallery of the Netherlands have formed a new collaboration to use the new technique to find bodily fluids.

The VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie are now really very almost done with their , ChristenUnie leader Gert-Jan Segers said to NOS on Friday afternoon. But he thinks the four parties will have to meet again on Monday.

There will be no meetings over the weekend. The ChristenUnie respects the Sunday rest. "And on Saturday I have other plans", Segers said to the broadcaster.

All school children in the Netherlands must visit the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Tweede Kamer in The Hague at least once in their school career, according to agreements the VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie made in their government formation talks, sources told the Telegraaf. The parties want to make it mandatory for schools to arrange these trips.

The pistol used to kill populist politician Pim Fortuyn in 2002 became part of the Rijksmuseum's collection in 2012, former director Wim Pijbes said to Quote. Fortuyn's relatives donated the weapon to the museum via the Public Prosecutor, NU.nl reports.

In 2010 the Rijksmuseum announced interest in buying the firearm, in order to one day exhibit it. But due to a commotion that arose, Pijbes abandoned the purchase. After "extensive consultations with the Fortuyn family" the murder weapon was given to the museum in 2012.

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is planning to hold an exhibition on the Netherlands' slavery history in 2020, director Taco Dibbits said to the Volkskrant on Friday. "In good and bad ways, it is all part of it and all must be shown", he said. 

The Rijksmuseum manages several objects that refer to the history of slavery. These include dioramas made of slave plantations, etchings and paintings depicting slaves and child slaves as servants in portraits of citizens. The museum also has a number of artworks showing the darker side of Dutch seafaring.

The Rijksmuseum bought an 18th century painting by Jean-Etienne Liotard titled Dutch girl at breakfast for nearly 5.2 million euros. The painting, which was owned by a British noble family for over 240 years, is the first purchase made by new director Taco Dibbits, the Telegraaf reports.

This week the British government issued an export license for the painting to be brought to the Netherlands.

About 12,500 visitors arrived at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam on Saturday to see the free exhibition of the marriage portraits featuring Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit, painted by Rembrandt. The paintings were purchased jointly for 160 million euros by the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre in Paris, with funding from the Netherlands and France.

Video footage of Rijksmuseum security staff throwing a young man out of the museum was posted on social media this weekend. The video shows the man lying motionless on the ground, with security staff standing around him. No one checked that he was okay.
