Rijksmuseum branch to open in Eindhoven, featuring works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and more
The municipality of Eindhoven and the Rijksmuseum reported Thursday that a new branch of the national museum will be built in Eindhoven, featuring works from the Rijksmuseum’s collection of Dutch masterpieces, including paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, and Rachel Ruys. The branch is expected to open in six to eight years, with the local tech giant ASML now joining as a founding partner.
The museum will occupy a 3,500-square-meter building along the Dommel River in a new city park near Kennedylaan, just minutes from Eindhoven Centraal station. In addition to paintings by renowned Dutch artists, the branch will also feature sculpture, furniture, glass, porcelain, fashion, textiles, drawings, photographs, and Asian art.
“The Rijksmuseum in Eindhoven is a valuable addition to the cultural climate of Brabant and beyond,” said Jeroen Dijsselbloem, mayor of Eindhoven. “Art and history have a unifying power in our rapidly growing Brainport region. This museum can be a place where everyone, young and old, enjoys a unique combination of history and creativity.”
Taco Dibbits, director of the Rijksmuseum, said the Eindhoven branch will make the museum’s collection of over one million objects more accessible to southern Netherlands. “The Rijksmuseum is of and for everyone. This is an important step to share our collection more widely,” he said, noting the museum’s longstanding ties to Eindhoven, including a 25-year founding partnership with Philips and support from KPN, ING, and the Vriendenloterij, now joined by ASML.
Christophe Fouquet, CEO of ASML, said the company is proud to support the project. “Attracting this world-renowned institution to the region gives more people the chance to enjoy its artistic and cultural treasures and strengthens Brainport Eindhoven as a cultural destination and a great place to live and work,” he said.
