The Zaanse Schans and Van Gogh museum were the most popular day attractions in the Netherlands for foreign tourists last year. These two attractions drew 1.63 and 1.6 million foreign visitors respectively, according to figures released by tourist office NBTC on Thursday.

After four months of negotiations the Netherlands and France have reached an agreement on their 160 million euro combined purchase of two Rembrandt portraits. The portraits, set for a lengthy restoration, will first undergo a brief touchup. They will then go on display in Paris for three months before arriving in Amsterdam, the ANP newswire reported on Monday.

Police in Amsterdam closed the Rijksmuseum on Sunday morning after an unusual object was found near the entrance. The national museum was evacuated by 10:30 a.m., and reopened about thirty minutes later, police said.
