A person was stabbed to death at the Capelsebrug subway station in Rotterdam on Monday morning following what witnesses described as a scuffle. The perpetrator is still at large, the Rotterdam police said on Twitter. 

Emergency services, including a trauma team by helicopter, responded to the subway station on Abraham van Rijckevorseplein just before 10:00 a.m. First responders tried to resuscitate the victim, but it was to no avail. They died at the scene. So far the police released no information regarding the victim's identity.

A a 25-year-old motorcyclist died in an accident while being chased by the police in Rotterdam on Sunday morning, the police said in a statement.

The police spotted two motorcyclists driving at high speed along Laan op Zuid in Rotterdam on Sunday morning and gave chase. At 2e Rosestraat one of the motorcyclists crashed into a RET bus. The rider, a 25-year-old man from Ridderkerk, died at the scene.

The other motorcyclist fell. He was not seriously injured and fled further on foot, the police said. He was arrested a short time later.

After a nationwide 24-hour long strike on Tuesday, public transit employees are back at work. The transit companies managed to restart their services without major issues.

NS reports no strike-related faults or delays on its website. The only delays reported have to do with planned track maintenance on the Leeuwarden-Meppel route, which will last until Sunday.

Regional public transit companies announced that they will join employees of NS and the city transporters in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague in a strike for a better pension system on May 28th. That means that nearly all public transit in the Netherlands will be shut down next week Tuesday, union FNV announced. Labour party PvdA expressed support for the strike.

A bus hit a lamppost on Stadshoudersweg in Rotterdam on Wednesday after one of the passengers assaulted the bus driver. It is still unclear why the man attacked the woman driving the bus, the police said. She did not sustain serious injuries. None of the passengers were hurt, RTL Nieuws reports.

According to Rotterdam public transit service RET, the man attacked the driver after he asked her question. "She answered his question and got a slap in the face and a punch in the stomach", a spokesperson said to the broadcaster. "She was so shocked that she hit a lamppost."

Employees of various sectors are striking for better pensions and to freeze the retirement age at 66 throughout the Netherlands on Monday. The first and most disrupting strike was in public transit between 6:00 a.m. and 7:06 a.m. During that time no NS trains were running, as well as no trams, subways and buses in Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam.

Monday will be a chaotic day for people who commute to work by public transport. NS announced that it will join an early morning strike held by city- and regional public transit companies, AD reports.

The public transit companies are protesting for freezing the retirement age at 66. For that reason they will strike from 6:00 a.m. for 66 minutes, trade union CNV Vakmensen said. The strike will likely also cause delays after its end.

Subway station Stadhuis in Rotterdam will be closed for at least two and a half weeks after asbestos was found there on Tuesday. The subway between Rotterdam Central Station and Beurs may start running again sooner, but then it won't stop at Stadhuis, Rotterdam transport company RET said, RTV Rijnmond reports.

Subway station Stadhuis in Rotterdam was evacuated on Tuesday afternoon after asbestos was released during construction work. The station is still completely closed and no subways are running through it. Rotterdam public transit company RET calls on travelers who were in the station on Tuesday to report to the company, RTL Nieuws reports.

Nine people were injured in a rear-end collision between two trams on Dwasdijk in Rotterdam on Sunday afternoon.

One victim sustained a head injury, according to ANP. The others had neck complaints, among other things. Four people were taken to hospital for examination. One was referred to a GP. And the other four were treated by paramedics at the scene.

The collision involved tram 23 and the Feyenoord tram. The authorities are investigating how the accident happened.

On December 29th, an experiment will start with running night subways in Rotterdam and its surrounding areas. For one year, transit company RET will run subways on all lines for an hour longer on Fridays and Saturdays. This means that the last subway will leave Rotterdam at 1:30 a.m., AD reports.

A serious shortage of bus drivers is looming just over the horizon, NOS reports after speaking to the Dutch public transit companies. Some companies even doubt whether they will be able to keep all their bus lines running in the near future.

Rotterdam public transport company RET denied the PVV and Geert Wilders' request to wrap anti-Islam banners around the city's trams. "We are a public transport company and politically neutral", a spokesperson said to NOS. According to the spokesperson, political messages on trams and buses does not suit the RET.

On Thursday morning Wilders posted a photo of the tram wraps on Twitter saying that he offered it to the RET. The wraps show a photo of Wilders and the slogan "Stop Islam".

Public transit operators in the Netherlands are taking concrete steps to go cashless this year. RET, which operates the Rotterdam subway network, is already upgrading all its turnstiles to accept more payment options than just th public transport card. Within a matter of months, Rotterdam travelers will be able to pay with their mobile phones, director Pedro Peters said in his new year's speech on Tuesday, AD reports.

About 100 people were given a public transport ban last year for being violent, aggressive or traveling without a ticket multiple times. A public transit ban is issued in cooperation with the police and Public Prosecutor. It bans the recipient from trains, subways, trams and buses for a limited period of a few weeks

A public bus crashed into an office building at the intersection of Vaanweg and Strevelsweg in Rotterdam on Tuesday morning. Twelve people were injured. It seems that the bus driver lost control of the bus after falling ill. "Someone shouted: 'she is unwell, the driver is unwell!' Tram traffic in the North and the center of Rotterdam was put on hold yesterday after an industrial accident occurred during maintenance work. One RET maintenance worker had to be brought to hospital after he received an electric shock, the NOS reports.
