The police in the Netherlands registered 18 thousand underage suspects last year, an increase of 6.5 percent compared to the year before. 2019 was the first year since 2009 in which more underage suspects were caught than the year before. In the past decade, the number of minor offenders more than halved, Statistics Netherlands reported on Friday.
Last year Victim Support helped nearly 172 thousand people in the Netherlands, the largest group of which were people in their twenties. The vast majority of people who sought help were victims of property- and violent crimes, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Thursday.
The police arrested a prisoner that escaped while being transported to a prison in Grave on Monday. The 39-year-old man was caught in a cafe in Rotterdam on Thursday night, the Public Prosecutor said on Friday.
The Belgian man, who has lived in the Netherlands for 30 years, was taken to a detention center. He is known for property crime and is suspected of fraud in the Netherlands. He's been in custody since August.
The Dutch police registered a total of 173,810 adults as suspects in some kind of crime last year, a 12 percent drop compared to 2014. That is the largest decline in the past decade, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday.
Fewer Dutch people became the victims of crime in 2015. Last year 17.6 percent of the Netherlands' population was a victim of crime, compared to 18.9 percent in 2014. The crime rate was the worst in Amsterdam and the best in Emmen, according to the Safety Monitor 2015.
