The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) is launching an internal investigation following the death of one of its psychiatric patients in an explosion in Veendam on Wednesday morning. The 37-year-old man died when his apartment exploded. And while the cause of the explosion is yet to be confirmed, many believe the man caused it himself.

One person was killed and two others sustained minor injuries in an explosion that wiped out an entire floor of a retirement apartment building in Veendam on Wednesday morning, local safety office Veiligheidsregio Groningen said on Twitter. 

A spokesperson for the safety office told NU.nl that the police are working on identifying the victim. The two injured people received treatment at the scene and did not have to go to the hospital.

A huge explosion in an apartment building in Veendam on Wednesday morning left the building on the edge of collapse, the Groningen fire department said on Twitter. The apartment building is located on the corner of Julianalaan and Prins Bernhardlaan. Emergency services are at the scene.

The fire department scaled the situation up to Grip 2, which is used in incidents that have a definite effect on the surrounding area. A single command is established and the mayor of the municipality was informed.

Residents of Best are pulling together and donating clothes, toys and other things to help a mother and two girls who lost everything they owned in a fire on Prins Bernhardlaan last weekend. Friends and neighbors are also working on having a birthday party for one of the girls on Saturday.

The police arrested a man on Sunday for setting fire to his home on Prins Bernhardlaan in Best while his two daughters were still inside. A neighbor managed to rescue the girls, aged 8 and 15 years, from the burning building in time.
