Camile Eurlings is stepping down as Dutch Member of the International Olympics Committee. The former cabinet minister and ex-CEO of KLM is leaving the IOC because of allegations that he assaulted his ex-girlfriend in 2015.
He made his decision public with an announcement on Friday afternoon, according multiple publications.
Dutch-American skater Carlijn Schoutens will be taking part in the Olympic Games on behalf of the United States. The 23-year-old skater placed with a 3 thousand meters winning time of 4.14,03 in Milwaukee on Tuesday, NU.nl reports.
Schoutens was born in the U.S., but moved to the Netherlands at a young age. She's skated for the Netherlands several times since, but decided to skate under the American flag since the 2014/2015 season.
"This has been a goal for me for a long time. The fact that I achieved it is incredible" Schouten said on Tuesday.
Camile Eurlings is determined to stay on as the Dutch member of the International Olympics Committee, despite calls for him to step down because of allegations that he assaulted his ex-girlfriend in 2015, AD reports.
"It says something about him", a former IOC member said to newspaper AD. "That you do not have the norms and values that you should have in the sport. Especially as an adult man and board member, you have to set an example."
On Wednesday afternoon the Dutch athletes who won medals at the Olympic Games gathered at the Ministry of General Affairs where they were personally congratulated by Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
