The Netherlands is liable for the execution of one man and the torture of another in the former Dutch East Indies, the Court of Appeals in The Hague ruled on Tuesday in two lawsuits filed by children of the victims against the Dutch state. These crimes are not time-barred, the court ruled, AD reports.

The lawsuit was filed by the children of an executed man, and by tortured man Javaan Yaseman, who has since died, and his children.

In August last year, gas extraction company NAM threatened to stop extracting gas in Groningen prematurely if the liability for damages caused by gas extraction in the province is not shifted away from the company, RTV Noord reports based on a secret report on a meeting between NAM director Thijs Jurgens, officials from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, and representatives of the National Coordinator for Groningen.

The police are liable for damages sustained during a mass shooting in the Ridderhof shopping center in Alphen aan den Rijn in 2011, the Supreme Court ruled on Friday. The authorities knew that gunman Tristan van der V. had psychological problems before he was issued a firearm permit, and he therefore should never have gotten that permit, the Supreme Court ruled.

On 9 April 2011, Tristan Van der V. opened fire in the Ridderhof shopping center. He killed six people and injured 16 others before committing suicide.

On Friday the Supreme Court held the Dutch State liable for the events that followed the fall of Bosnian enclave Srebrenica in 2015, but to a lesser extent than the court in The Hague did in a previous ruling. The court previously ruled that the surviving relatives could claim 30 percent of damages suffered from the State. The Supreme Court reduced that to 10 percent, NU.nl reports.

Ukraine and Canada have joined a lawsuit relatives of people killed in the MH17 disaster filed against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights, Sander de Lang, one of the lawyers representing relatives in this case, confirmed to NU.nl after a report in AD.

The surviving relatives filed the complaint against Russia in 2016, holding the country liable for downing the Malaysia Airlines flight over eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014. On April 4th, the European Court of Human Rights announced that it would handle the complaint.

Exactly two years after Ajax footballer Abdelhak Nouri went into cardiac arrest during a match, leaving him with permanent and severe brain damage, cardiologists at the Amsterdam UMC are calling for better heart screening for athletes. The current method for early detection of heart disorders in athletes is outdated, cardiologist Harald Jørstad of the Amsterdam hospital said to Nieuwsuur on Monday.

The Netherlands and Australia will start talks with Russia about the country's liability in the downing of flight MH17 in the coming weeks, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to NU.nl after reports in RTL Nieuws. 

"We are in contact with Russia through diplomatic channels about state accountability. We are increasingly confident that we will soon be meeting with the Russians", the spokesperson said. The Ministry would not say anything about the date and location of the consultation.

The Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA admitted liability for an accident in December 2015 in which a 4-year-old boy died. Maurycy Biernacki fell from a play set at indoor playground Happy Days in Grootebroek and died a few days later.

The play set did not meet safety requirements. That should have come to light during NVWA inspections, but mistakes were made, a spokesperson said to NOS.

The family of footballer Abdelhak Nouri, who sustained severe brain damage after collapsing during a practice match last year, is holding Ajax responsible for what happened to him. The family is stepping to the KNVB arbitration committee, because Ajax refuses to accept any liability for the brain damage Nouri sustained, the family's lawyer said, NOS reports.
