Intertoys on Damrak in Amsterdam Centrum

Part of bankrupt toy store chain Intertoys is going to make a new start, the company announced on Friday. Portuguese investor Green Swan is acquiring half of the 286 stores. The others will have to close, NU.nl reports.

Depending on the number of stores that can remain open, between 1 thousand and 1,500 jogs will be retained, a spokesperson for the company said to the newspaper. Intertoys currently has 3,200 employees. At least half of them will be able to keep their jobs, according to the newspaper. At least 91 stores will close by mid-May at the latest.

Hudson's Bay is struggling in the Netherlands. The 13 department stores in the country are suffering a loss of 80 million euros this year, and layoffs may be ahead, the Telegraaf reports based on internal documents.

A spokesperson for Hudson's Bay in the Netherlands did not want to say much to the newspaper, only saying that it is "clear that something is going to happen, but the new owners still have to make a decision".

KPN will implement 350 million euros in cutbacks over the next three years to accelerate its transition from telephone company to a modern telecom company, the company announced on its investors' day. Whether any jobs will be lost is not yet clear, ANP reports.

One of the cuts the company will make is in labor costs. But that can not be directly translated in a concrete number of full-time jobs being lost, because it also involves the hiring of external staff, a KPN spokesperson said to the news wire. KPN currently employs around 12,600 people full-time.

ABN Amro is taking various measures at its corporate bank, including scrapping 250 jobs. The bank wants to increase this department's profitability, ABN Amro announced at the presentation of its figures for the second quarter, Het Parool reports.

The corporate bank, officially called the Corporate and Institutional Bank (CIB), accounts for 2,600 of ABN Amro's total 19 thousand jobs. CIB is responsible for financing shipping and the energy sector, and for managing acquisitions and IPOs.

The government is planning to close four prisons in the Netherlands, sources told newspaper AD. The prisons need to close because there are too many empty cells in the country, but this will also cause job losses for prison staff.

The prisons in Zoetermeer, Zeist, Almere and Zwaag are on the list to be closed, according to the newspaper. By choosing those prisons, the government hopes to save prisons outside the Randstad, where prison workers will have a harder time finding new work.

German technology company Siemens is closing its branch in Hengelo, which employs 600 people. The closure forms part of a reorganization in Siemens' energy and gas branch that will cost over 6 thousand jobs worldwide, a spokesperson for the company confirmed to NU.nl.

The staff of the Hengelo branch were informed about what is happening at a meeting at stadium Grolsche Veste on Friday morning. The CEO of the division explained the closure via a video link. Whether there will be any forced redundancies, is not yet clear.

Tata Steel, the parent company of the steel plant in IJmuiden, and the German ThyssenKrupp are merging their European Steelworks. The two companies expect that the merge will result in the loss of 4 thousand jobs throughout Europe, they said in a joint statement, AD reports.

Half of the jobs will be lost in the production branch and the other half in the administrative branch. The job losses will be distributed evenly across the two companies. The consequences for jobs in the IJmuiden plant, were not specified.

Shell may scrap around 400 jobs in the Netherlands, mainly in the Projects & Technology division in Amsterdam and Rijswijk, the oil and gas giant confirmed on Monday. This round of layoffs will be part of measures taken in the last quarter of this year, ANP reports.

Some of the affected employees may be able to continue working in another division at Shell. The precise impact is not yet clear and it still has to be discussed with the central works council and trade unions, the company emphasized.

Store chain Blokker will be closing 100 branches in the coming year. Sister company Marskramer will close another 100. A total of 1,900 jobs will disappear at Blokker, Marskramer and at parent company Blokker Holding, the company announced on Tuesday. Blokker Holding will eventually cease to exist. Marskramer will continue on a franchise formula. And chains Intertoys, Maxi Toys, Big Bazar, Xenos and Leen Bakker will be sold off, ANP reports.

In the next four years PostNL will be cutting another 2 thousand jobs while accelerating the company's transformation into a parcel delivery specialist, the Dutch postal service announced with its annual figures on Monday, ANP reports. Up until the end of 2020 between 500 and 600 full time jobs will disappear annually from the Dutch mail division.

According to CEO Herna Verhagen, there will only be a few forced dismissals. Most employees will be stepping down willingly or reassigned. In the same period 1,600 new jobs will be created in the package division.

Achmea is cutting about 2 thousand jobs in the Netherlands between now and 2019, the insurer announced on Thursday, ANP reports.

According to the insurer, these job cuts are necessary due to the further digitization and the changing needs of the customer. "A further decrease in our costs and number of jobs is inevitable", the insurer said. Achmea hopes to cut costs by at least 200 million euros in the next few years.

The central agency for the reception of asylum seekers COA is cutting 1,300 of its total 4 thousand jobs, the Ministry of Security and Justice announced on Monday. This mostly affects people who are working for the COA on a temporary contracts, NU.nl reports

The COA needs to cut jobs due to the decrease in the number of asylum seekers in the Netherlands. Over the past years the number of COA employees were increased to deal with an influx, but that is no longer necessary. The people who have to leave were already informed.

ABN Amro is implementing more cutbacks that will result in 1,500 lost jobs, the bank announced on Wednesday at the presentation of its qurterly results, the Telegraaf reports.

This new round of cutbacks could yield some 400 million euros in savings and comes in addition to in recent months. The bank currently employs 26,500 people. By 2020 that number will be cut to 23 thousand.

British retail chain Marks & Spencer is closing dozens of stores in a number of countries, including the Netherlands, as part of a major cost cutting operation. In the Netherlands the storesi n Amsterdam and The Hague are closing their doors. These stores employ a total of about 160 people, ANP reports.

Worldwide 2,100 jobs will be lost. Marks & Spencer will discuss plans for these employees with the works councils in affected countries, and possibly aso with the unions, accoring to ANP.

Twitter is downsizing and may be closing the Dutch office on Amsterdam's Zuidas in an effort to cut costs. The company also plans to lay off hundreds of employees worldwide, Het Parool reports.

According to the newspaper, Twitter was in talks with Salesforce, Alphabet and Disney to be acquired. But all three companies dropped out, particularly because of Twitters high costs. 

Twitter is therefore cutting its workforce. This could go hand-in-hand with a number of foreign offices closing, including the one in Amsterdam.

Broadcaster SBS firmly denies reports that it is planning to layoff a significant number of its staff. On Thursday morning newspaper AD reported that a quarter of the SBS staff will be laid off. A spokesperson for the broadcaster now told NU.nl that this is absolutely not true.
