It seems increasingly likely that a new cycling bridge will be built over the IJ river in Amsterdam, instead of a tunnel under it. Research by the Ministry of Infrastructure showed that raising the existing bridges over the river higher will cost unaffordable amounts of money, which eliminates the need to build the new bridge extra high - the main argument for building a tunnel instead.
A 24-year-old man was taken from the water at Bogortein on Java island in Amsterdam Oost on Monday. He was resuscitated and rushed to hospital, but passed away. The victim was an exchange student from Ecuador, the Telegraaf reports.
The student was swimming with friends when he disappeared under water. His friends sounded the alarm.
Fire department divers found him quickly and resuscitated him at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
A sea mine was found during dredging work in the IJ in Amsterdam, near Java Island on Wednesday evening. The police believe the explosive dates from World War II. An explosives clearance team from Defense dived to the bomb late on Wednesday night and will re-enter the water this morning. There is no immediate danger to the surrounding area, according to the police.
At midnight the Netherlands welcomed 2018. Thousands of people attended firework shows in Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague, despite the rainy and windy weather. A few fireworks shows had to be canceled due to the weather conditions, NU.nl reports.
The National Fireworks show on and around the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam continued without too many adjustments, according to the newspaper. An estimated 60 thousand people came to watch the fireworks.
The new bicycle and pedestrian bridge Amsterdam has planned over the IJ river, between Java Island and Noord, will open for ships that can't fit beneath it at request, Het Parool reports based on the municipality's plans for the Java Bridge. This means that the estimated 30 thousand cyclists who will use the bridge, will often find it with closed gates, waiting for a ship to pass.
Plans for a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the IJ river in Amsterdam, can not count on support from Dutch public works department Rijkswaterstaat or Minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen of Infrastructure and Environment, ANP reports.
The bridge is intended to connect Java island and neighborhood Noord. But according to the Rijkswaterstaat, such a bridge would hinder boating traffic. A tunnel would be a better idea.
