The Dutch government will spend around 1 billion euros more on IT projects than originally planned, Financieele Dagblad concludes after analyzing 125 recent ICT initiatives by the national government.

The original budget for the analyzed projects was approximately 2.5 billion euros. The expected costs have now risen to 3.5 billion euros, according to the newspaper. On average, the projects are 36 percent over budget. For 22 projects, costs doubled.

Dutch companies are finally again investing more money into research and development. In 2017 R&D investment will amount to 4.3 percent of revenue, the highest level since 2012, according to figures Erasmus University released on Wednesday. Investment into IT will increase to 4.8 percent of revenue, the highest level since 2009. Last year R&D- and IT investment amounted to 2.1 and 2 percent of revenue respectively, NU.nl reports. 

According to the university, the R&D and IT branches are important indicators of technological innovation.

The replacement of the National Police's digital archive system cost the government millions of euros more than expected, newspaper AD reports based on its own research. The system, called Documentum, was installed in 2013 and is still not working properly.

The police completely underestimated the cost and effort involved in installing and implementing the new system, according to the newspaper. In 2014 a police official already stated that the "software is more complex than previously estimated". The police's IT personnel do not understand how the digitial archive works.

The Supreme Court of the Netherlands is sending a series of questions to the European Court of Justice to decide if by sharing torrent files, The Pirate Bay is violating Europe's copyright directive. The questions concern a court case brought by copyright protection organization Brein against internet service providers Ziggo and XS4ALL.

The parent company of retailers Dixons, MyCom and iCentre were declared bankrupt on Tuesday, with the administrator wanting to halt any further accumulation of debt. Together, the parent firm of the retailers employs 1,200 people in the Netherlands, including 650 at Dixons, 350 at MyCom and 190 at iCentre.

Network problems continue to plague Dutch telecom Ziggo, as thousands of people took to social media Monday afternoon to complain about a loss of landline telephone service from the provider.
