The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam kicked off on Wednesday with a royal award for founder Ally Derks. The departing IDFA director was appointed an Officer in the Order of Oranje-Nassau by Minister Kasja Ollongren of Home Affairs on Wednesday evening.

The 29th edition of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdm (IDF) is kicking off in the Dutch capital on Wednesday night with a screening of Stranger in Paradise at the ROyal Theater Carre. The Dutch documentary by director Guido Hendrikx focuses on the asylum seekers crisis in Europe, Het Parool reports.

The IDFA runs until November 27th. A total of over 300 films will be screened, 102 of which will be making their world premier at the festival. The program includes 44 Dutch titles.

Last year the number of events and festivals in Noord-Holland increased by 10 percent, compared to 2014. While the number of such events in Amsterdam decreased by one, according to the annual Festival Monitor. This is because many Amsterdam festivals moved to surrounding municipalities in the province
