A petition by the Red Cross to give all high school pupils first aid lessons was signed by more than 50 thousand people. According to the Red Cross, teenagers and young people want to help victims of a car accident for example, but they know too little about how to do it and are therefore afraid. If they are taught first aid at school, helping becomes easier, NOS reports.
Barrels containing the explosive substance picric acid were found in a chemistry room at Groningen high school CSG Augustine. The Ministry of Defense's explosives clearance department removed the barrels from the school and safely detonated it elsewhere, RTV Noord reports.
School director Ritske Pieter Tulner told the broadcaster that the substance was stored in a closed area of the chemistry room. "It is one of the many substances that we have collected over the years. In this case it is picric acid. That can dry out and then become explosive."
Teachers and pupils at a secondary school in Veenendaal were shocked to find out that five new pupils at the school weren't high school kids at all, but actors placed at the school for a television program, De Volksrkant reports. Recordings for the RTL 4 program, called Klasse, have since been halted.
The Christelijk Lyceum Veenendaal (CLV) management organized a meeting in which the school admitted that it was aware that the five new pupils were actors. But the teachers and pupils had no idea and the revelation caused quite a bit of unrest last week, according to the newspaper.
STIP, a special education high school on Europalaan in Utrecht, was evacuated on Thursday afternoon due to a telephonic threat. One suspect was arrested, the Telegraaf reports.
Where the threat came from, and what exactly it entailed, is not yet clear. The police are taking it seriously and are investigating the incident.
Police officers in bullet proof vests were present at the school on a large scale. All pupils and teachers were safely evacuated from the school, the STIP director said to the Telegraaf.
A pupil of the Corderius College in Amersfoort was suspended for making a Nazi video featuring one of the school's teachers. The pupil photoshopped the teacher's head into footage showing Nazi practices and the video ended up online, RTV Utrecht reports.
"It's a so-called joke", rector Egbert Boerma said to the broadcaster. "But there are jokes with far-reaching consequences. Pupils have to know that and sometimes they have to feel it too." For privacy reasons, the school did not say whether the pupil is a boy or a girl.
Dutch high schools are increasingly getting rid of traditional timetables and experimenting with new ones. Currently at least a fifth of secondary schools in the Netherlands have said goodbye to traditional 50 minutes-long lessons, according to a survey by Leerling 2020, a project of sector organization VO-Raad, AD reports.

All locations of school community Lek en Linge in Culemborg were evacuated on Tuesday morning due to a bomb threat. Because it was initially unclear which location was threatened, the police ordered all locations evacuated. No bomb was found, AD reports.
The bomb threat turned out to be aimed at VMBO location on Ina Boudier-Bakkerstraat in Culemborg. The bomb would go off at 11:00 a.m., according to a threat. The police carefully searched the school. Nothing was found and pupils were allowed to return to their classes.
The exams in high schools desperately need to be modernized, according to the VO-Raad, the council for high schools in the Netherlands. The current method of exams only test knowledge, while tertiary institutions often also look for other skills like team work and critical thinking, the council says, AD reports.

Thousands of high school students across the Netherlands are still waiting for their school books. School book supplier Van Dijk Educatie is struggling with major delivery problems, De Stentor reports.
Schools calling Van Dijk to complain are met with an automated message in which the company acknowledges the problems, according to the newspaper. The supplier estimates that about 7,500 high school pupils do not have their complete learning package yet. Some haven't received any books.
By the end of next year, Dutch soft drink producers will stop selling sugar-filled soft drinks at high schools in the Netherlands, Raymond Gianotten, director of the Dutch Association for Soft Drinks Waters and Juices, said to RTL Nieuws. By the end of 2018, only light variants of soft drinks will be available at high schools.
"We want to help young people make a healthier choice", Gianotten said. "There are still some ongoing contracts, but as far as we are concerned, this will be done as soon as possible."

A teacher committed suicide at the Stedelijk Gymnasium in Den Bosch on Monday morning. The teacher jumped off the school building and died. A number of pupils saw the teacher jump, ANP reports.
The police would only confirm that there was a suicide at the school. The school management could not yet be reached for comment.
According to Omroep Brabant, the teacher jumped at around 9:45 a.m. as students arrived at school. Eye witnesses told the Gelderlander that the teacher jumped from the fourth floor of the building.
