An investigation into the use of sustainable fish at high-end restaurants in the Netherlands determined that most served at least one fish item that could have long-lasting negative impact on the ecosystem. The study, carried out by non-profit organization Good Fish Foundation (GFF), found that 89 percent of restaurants use a fish species that is red-flagged on the organization’s sustainability index VISwijzer.
Waterboard Rijn en IJssel will use pike to get rid of "illegal" goldfish in Arnhem's newly constructed city stream. City residents released the goldfish in the the stream because they found the new concrete waterway on the boring side, but as goldfish are exotics the waterboard is worried that they will supplant the native fish in the Rijn, ANP reports.
The waterboard is therefore now releasing pike into the Jansbeek, in the hope that the predators will eat the goldfish.
A massive shipment fish that the Rotterdam police seized in a drug bust last month, is being donated to zoos and aquariums in the Netherlands, the Public Prosecutor announced. It involves thousands of kilograms of hake and cod that were used to hide 1,125 kilograms of cocaine from Ecuador.
The Krabbeplas near Vlardingen was closed for swimming on Wednesday after the discovery of thousands of dead fish in the lake. They likely died due to the heat, RTV Rijnmond reports.
Passersby saw the dead fish floating in the lake on Wednesday morning and called Staatsbosbeheer, which decided to close down the area around the lake. Visitors were already warned against swimming in the lake due to blue-green algae.
Samples were taken from the lake, to find out why the fish died.
The majority of children under the age of 13 in the Netherlands eat less fruit, vegetables and fish than the Nutrition Center recommends, according to a health survey by Statistics Netherlands in collaboration with the RIVM and the Nutrition Center. In the period between 2014 and 2016 less than four in ten children ate enough fruit, just over four in ten ate enough vegetables, and little more than half ate enough fish.
The health survey is annually conducted among around 1,100 children. Researchers question the kids' parents about the food they eat.

The first barrel of Dutch herring was sold at auction in Scheveningen, Zuid-Holland on Wednesday, fetching 53,000 euros. The annual auction raised money this year for the National Foundation for the Elderly.
The start of the herring season is postponed until June 18, the Dutch Fish Marketing Bureau, known locally as the Nederlands Visbureau, announced earlier on Monday.
