Fish seized in drug bust donated to Dutch zoos, aquariums
A massive shipment fish that the Rotterdam police seized in a drug bust last month, is being donated to zoos and aquariums in the Netherlands, the Public Prosecutor announced. It involves thousands of kilograms of hake and cod that were used to hide 1,125 kilograms of cocaine from Ecuador.
The drugs were discovered in one of three containers in a shipment of frozen fish in Rotterdam on July 6th. The drugs and the fish in that container were destroyed. The fish in the other two containers were stored in a freezer room rented by the police. "It seemed a better idea to feed the fish to other sea dwellers than to process them into fishmeal for biofuel for a lot of money", the Prosecutor said.
The seized cocaine had a street value of at least 22 million euros, according to AD. Seven people from The Hague, Utrecht, Tiel, Albania and the United States were arrested. They are still in custody.
