The police confiscated 50 kilograms of chocolate from a foreign car on the A2 highway near Geleen on Saturday. The three people in the car were arrested, the police said on Twitter.

The chocolate was packed into cooler-bags. The three people in the car could not give the police a believable explanation of where the chocolate came from or where they were going with it.

Two types of chocolate Easter bunnies sold in the Netherlands may be contaminated with mineral oils, according to watchdog foodwatch. The bunnies concerned are Riegelein Confiserie 60 grams gold bunny, sold at Sligro and the Lindt 100 grams gold bunny, sold at Sligro and Albert Heijn.

Chocolate company Mars recalled millions of chocolate bars in 55 countries, because they may contain pieces of plastic which could be a chocking hazard. In the Netherlands alone Mars Nederland recalled about 4 million chocolate bars on Tuesday.

In 2013 Dutch people each spent just over 95 euro on candy per person. More than half of this money was spent on chocolate.

A taxi firm in Amsterdam is refusing to drive people dressed as Sinterklaas or Zwarte Piet in protest of human rights violations widely believed to be perpetrated by the chocolate industry. Taxi Electric says that four of every ten chocolate bars are made by children, and one in ten is produced by slave labour.

Supermarket chain Albert Heijn has mostly dropped the black-faced version of Zwarte Piet from it’s stores and product packaging, the company’s parent said Wednesday. Though the character might pop up on the boxes of candies and cookies, the store’s parent company, Ahold, says it will not be used inside or outside stores.
