Cancer was the most common cause of death in the Netherlands last year, with 31 percent of the 150 thousand people who passed away dying of the disease, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

More men than women died of cancer last year. 35 percent of the men who died in 2017 died of cancer, compared to 27 percent of women. The number of people who died of cancer also increased. Last year 47 thousand people in the Netherlands died of cancer, compared to 45,279 in 2016, 44,195 in 2015 nd 42,984 in 2014.

For the first time ever, the Health Council of the Netherlands warned against the consequences of sitting still for long periods of time in its new Movement Guidelines. The general gist of the guidelines is: moving is good, moving more is better, the council wrote in the report.

The number of euthanasia cases in the Netherlands increased by 10 percent last year. A total of 6,091 people died through euthanasia, 557 more than in 2015, according to an annual report by the euthanasia review committees, AD reports.

Most of the euthanasia cases involved cancer. There were also many cases of nervous system disorders and cardiovascular diseases. The number of euthanasia cases involving patients with dementia, psychiatric disorders or old age ailments also increased.

In 2013 the most common causes of death in the Netherlands was cancer and cardiovascular disease. Of the more than 141 thousand people who died in 2013, 42 thousand (30 percent) died of cancer and 38 thousand (27 percent) died of cardiovascular diseases.
