Rotterdam shooting suspect arrested in Spain within days of fleeing
Spanish police detained a 27-year-old man from Rotterdam on May 29 on suspicion of direct involvement in a violent shooting on Beijerlandselaan in Rotterdam-Feijenoord. The Rotterdam police confirmed the arrest publicly on Wednesday.
After the incident, the 27-year-old suspect fled the country but was tracked down and detained by Spanish authorities within three days.
The shooting occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, May 26, at around 5 a.m. A 45-year-old Rotterdam resident sustained serious injuries and was urgently transported to the hospital for treatment. Eyewitness accounts and local media report that the victim was hit in the head. He has remained in the hospital for treatment due to the seriousness of his injuries.
Local media outlets such as Rijnmond reported that forensic teams carried out a thorough investigation on Beijerlandselaan in the Hillesluis neighbourhood. Multiple shell casings were recovered at the scene.
Investigators are still working to establish the Rotterdam suspect’s exact role and motive. It has not yet been disclosed when he will be transferred to the Netherlands.
As the motive remains unclear, police are continuing to appeal for witnesses who may have seen or heard anything suspicious on or near Beijerlandselaan in the early hours of May 26.
