Police apologize for sharing innocent woman’s photo as suspect in fake cop scam
Police and the Public Prosecution Service have apologized after an innocent woman was mistakenly shown as a suspect on the television program Opsporing Verzocht, a Dutch crime show in which police ask the public for help identifying suspects in ongoing investigations. The woman came forward after her photo aired in connection with a fraud investigation involving fake police officers in Nieuwleusen. According to the RTL, the authorities quickly confirmed she had no involvement in the case.
“The woman appeared in the broadcast because she matched the description of the suspect and was in the area of the crime at the time of the fraud,” the police said. “It has now become clear that the findings were not sufficiently verified and that a wrong conclusion was drawn too quickly.”
The police acknowledged the significant impact on the woman, noting the broad reach of Opsporing Verzocht, which covers and solves hundreds of cases each year. “For many people, it appeared that she was suspected of a criminal offense,” the statement said. “The police and the Public Prosecution Service deeply regret this mistake and have offered personal apologies in a private meeting.”
The security footage shown during the broadcast has been removed. In consultation with the woman, police released one identifiable photo on their website to clarify that she has no connection to the criminal investigation.
