Parents blame Amsterdam climbing gym directors for son’s fatal fall
The parents of an 11-year-old boy who died after falling from a climbing wall in Amsterdam are holding the two directors of Klimmuur Amsterdam BV responsible for their son’s death, De Telegraaf reports. During a court hearing in Amsterdam, the boy’s mother sharply criticized the climbing gym’s leadership, accusing them of allowing her son to climb in what she called an “extremely unsafe house of cards.” She told the court, “Because of you, we lost him, and that is criminal.”
The Public Prosecution Service is charging Klimmuur Amsterdam BV and its two directors with involuntary manslaughter. According to the prosecutor, the company acted with extreme carelessness, negligence, and lack of caution. At the time of the accident, the court heard, there was insufficient supervision of climbers who were using the facility for the first time.
The fatal accident happened on November 3, 2023, during a children’s birthday party at the climbing gym near Amsterdam Centraal station. The boy fell from a great height and later died in the hospital from his injuries.
The mother described the loss as a “total devastation, a deep trauma that has torn our lives apart.” She held the directors fully accountable for the tragedy. “I expected the climbing party to be 100 percent safe. You gambled with my child’s life, and we lost.”
She said she was outraged by the directors’ responses during the hearing. “Your careless, lax attitude and vague philosophy created a completely unsafe operation,” she said. She emphasized that the risk of an accident was high and that what happened was not a mere accident but the predictable result of “a very shaky house of cards.” She described the climbing wall as a “ticking time bomb,” noting, “Everything depended on human judgment.”
