Dutch police arrest Venray man on terrorism charges
A 24-year-old man from Venray was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses, including making threats involving a terrorist act and distributing incendiary materials.
The suspect came to the attention of Dutch authorities earlier this month after Belgian police raised concerns about several social media accounts. The Belgian authorities, alarmed by a TikTok video, suspected that the user behind the accounts might be planning a violent attack. The man had thousands of followers on the platform.
Dutch police identified the suspect as a Syrian asylum seeker who had been living in the Netherlands since 2018.
Further investigation into the social media accounts revealed a video in which the suspect sang in praise of martyrdom and promoted its glorification. He also shared an image from an ISIS-affiliated news outlet that called for attacks.
During the arrest, authorities confiscated two mobile phones and a laptop. The suspect appeared before a magistrate in Rotterdam on Friday and was remanded in custody for two weeks.
