Only a 30% chance of temps rising to 25°C as summer eludes the Netherlands

Summer just does not want to reach the Netherlands this year. Maximums won’t climb higher than the low twenties in the coming week, and there’s only a 30 percent chance of thermometers reaching summer values of 25 degrees Celsius or higher by the end of the month, according to the meteorological institute KNMI.

Cloud cover and daily showers will prevail for the rest of this week and weekend, intermixed with occasional periods of sunshine. Maximums will climb to between 17 and 20 degrees, maybe even reaching as high as 22 degrees on Sunday.

While that is bad news for Netherlands residents eagerly waiting for summer, these temperatures are pretty close to typical for the time of year. The long-term average maximum between June 11 and 20 is 19.8 degrees Celsius, according to the KNMI.

Next week will still be gloomy with daily showers, but the southwesterly wind will bring some warmer air into the country. “Though summer scenes are not on the agenda for the time being,” Weeronine said. Maximums will climb to an average of 20 degrees on Monday and 21 to 23 degrees on Tuesday.

After Tuesday, the forecast is more uncertain. The KNMI expects temperatures around 20 degrees Celcius and fairly mild nights. “From the second half of next week, there will be more daily sun, the chance of daily precipitation will decrease to 50-60 percent, and the chance of summer maximum temperatures is approximately 30 percent,” the meteorological institute said in its long-term forecast up to June 27. Maximums between 25 and 29 degrees are considered summer values.
