Strong wind warning issued for all of the Netherlands; 21 degrees on Monday

A Code Yellow weather warning was issued for the entire Netherlands on Thursday. The coastal provinces are covered by a strong winds warning until 9:00 a.m. and then again later in the day. Dutch meteorological institute KNMI said that gusts of wind were likely to reach up to 75 km/h from 10 a.m. in Limburg, and up to 90 km/h on the Wadden Islands later in the day. The weather was likely to improve going into the weekend, with temperatures in the low twenties at the start of next week.

Wednesday was already blustery, with wind gusts hitting a maximum of 88 km/h at the Noord-Holland coast, and 48 km/h in some isolated inland areas. No weather warnings were issued for Wednesday, though similar strong winds were likely to continue on Thursday.

The strong winds out of the southeast were predicted to impact southern Limburg before moving on to the rest of the country. The Code Yellow warning is in effect there from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m, with gusts reaching 75 km/h.

“From about 12 p.m., there is a local risk of heavy wind gusts from 75 km/h to about 90 km/h in the Wadden area throughout the country; the wind direction will then be westerly,” the KNMI wrote in its alert. The provinces of Flevoland, Friesland, and Groningen will be under the warning until about 9 p.m., as will the Wadden Islands.

The strong gusts are also expected in the remaining regions from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Those provinces include Drenthe, Gelderland, Noord-Brabant, Noord-Holland, Utrecht, Zeeland, and Zuid-Holland. The IJsselmeer region also falls under the more limited alert.

"Traffic and outdoor activities may be hindered by this,” the KNMI wrote. “At the beginning of the evening, the heavy wind gusts in the central and eastern region will disappear; then a few hours later in the north and northwest.”

The wind will calm down dramatically on Friday, becoming mild by Sunday. Temperatures will range up to 10 degrees Celsius on Friday and Saturday with a good chance of precipitation. Although overnight temperatures will remain chilly, the thermometer could climb to 14 degrees on Sunday. Both weekend days are predicted to be partly cloudy, but with some sunny periods on Sunday, and then also on Monday.

The workweek should kick off with maximum daytime temperatures between 18 and 21 degrees on a rather dry Monday. The thermometer could remain high on a partly Sunny Tuesday, but with a higher chance of rain.
