Temps up to 32°C trigger code yellow warning, National Heat Plan for southern half of NL

The KNMI has implemented a code yellow warning for high temperatures, and the RIVM has activated its National Heat Plan for the southern half of the Netherlands. Temperatures up to 33 degrees Celsius are expected, though the north will be significantly cooler.

“This weekend, maximum temperatures in the southern half of the country will range between 30-32°C, possibly reaching 33°C locally in the south,” the KNMI said. Urban areas will be a few degrees warmer than non-urban areas. At night, minimums will be between 16 and 18 degrees.

“The persistent heat can be particularly dangerous for the elderly and people with vulnerable health,” the KNMI warned. In the National Heat Plan, the RIVM urges healthcare professionals and other caregivers to pay extra close attention to the people in their care.

Saturday will be abundantly sunny with a moderate wind from the northeast. At this stage, the KNMI expects to lift the code yellow warning at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, but warns that the very warm weather will continue into next week.

“Sunny, dry, and very warm, especially in the central and southern regions, with maximum temperatures above 30 degrees. In the north, it will be less warm, with frequent winds from the sea,” the KNMI said. “From mid-next week, there is an increasing chance of rain and thunderstorms.”
