Fans take to the streets after Morocco's loss; Unrest in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague

Disappointed fans took to the streets in many Dutch cities after Morocco’s 2-0 defeat against France in the World Cup quarter-finals. Riot police had to intervene in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague, where there was a lot of honking and fireworks being set off. Multiple people were arrested.

The Amsterdam police told NOS that the atmosphere during the match was “friendly and festive.” Most supporters left Plein 40-45 shortly after the match, but small groups lingered here and there, the spokesperson said.

AT5 reported that the riot police cleared Tussen Meer around 1:30 a.m. The Amsterdam police arrested eight people for disturbing public order, dangerous driving, and throwing a brick at a police officer. According to RTL Nieuws, around 220 fines were issued around Cornelis Lelylaan for running red lights, driving on tram tracks, and speeding.

The Rotterdam police told Rijnmond that the atmosphere in the city was “generally quite good.” Riot police intervened near the 1e Middellandstraat when several hundred people ignored community fathers’ call to go home.

In The Hague’s Schilderswijk, police were pelted with glass bottles on and around Vaillantlaan. Riot police intervened around 1:00 a.m., after which calm returned.
