Computer glitch brings train traffic to a halt in Gelderland

A malfunction in a computer system brought train traffic around Arnhem, Nijmegen and Zutphen to a halt on Wednesday morning. The malfunction meant that train traffic controllers could not operate the signals and switches, making it impossible for trains to run safely. The malfunction has been resolved, ProRail said at around 8:00 a.m., but it was likely to take at least an hour for traffic to restart at a basic level.

According to ProRail, the malfunction was first noticed at around 5:30 a.m. Due to the disruption, no trains could run to and from Arnhem Centraal, Zutphen, and Nijmegen, NS said. Extra travel time could run up to two hours, the rail company warned, advising travelers to avoid the region.

NS reported that train traffic is starting up again, but delays and problems were expected until at least 9:00 a.m.
