Train crashes into car during police chase in Berghem; Two killed

Two people were killed during a police chase in Berghem near Oss overnight. A passenger train hit the car with the two victims inside as it drove over a railway crossing.

The accident happened around 1:00 a.m. at the railway crossing on Burgemeester van Erpstraat.

The police were chasing the car because it was “a suspicious vehicle,” a police spokesperson told NOS without providing any further information. Officers at the scene told Brabants Dagblad that the driver had ignored a police stop sign on the A50.

The train that hit the car was coming from Nijmegen and heading toward Den Bosch. As far as is known, no one on the train got hurt.

Due to the accident, no trains are running between Nijmegen and Den Bosch on Tuesday morning. ProRail is examining the train and tracks for potential damage, a spokesperson for the rail manager told RTL Nieuws.

NS deployed buses between Nijmegen and Den Bosch and limited buses between Wijchen and Oss. ProRail advised travelers to check alternative routes before departure.

The Rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at government services like the police, is investigating the accident.

There have been several police chases that ended in accidents in the Netherlands over the past few months. In September, one person died and three got hurt when their car crashed into a viaduct in Amsterdam while the police were chasing them. In early October, five people got hurt in a crash during a police chase in Almere. A week later, there was another fatal crash during a police chase in Amsterdam.
