Motorcycle cop shoots suspect in Amsterdam

A motorcycle police officer shot a suspect on De Wittenkade in Amsterdam on Tuesday. This happened after a "suspicious situation", the Amsterdam police said on Twitter. A second suspect was arrested.

The motorcycle cop responded to a report of a suspicious situation, the police said in a statement. He noticed two men walking on Van Beuningenstraat. When he addressed them, they ran towards De Wittenkade, the police said.

The responding police officer claimed he saw one suspect with a firearm, leading to a situation where he said he had to shoot the suspect, injuring him. The other suspect surrendered. Both were arrested, and the wounded suspect was taken to a hospital, the police said.

The police said that a firearm was found during the arrest. It was confiscated. The area was closed down as a crime scene, and forensic investigators were deployed.

Multiple ambulances and a trauma helicopter responded to the scene, AT5 reports. Witnesses told the broadcaster that multiple shots were fired.

Exactly what the "suspicious situation" entailed, is not clear. The shot suspect's current condition is also unknown.
