Two Dutch-Turks arrested in Greece for plot to kill Erdogan

Two Dutch-Turks are currently in custody in Greece on suspicion of involvement in a plan to kill Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. They form part of a group that planned an attack on the Turkish president using rockets and Molotov cocktails, the Telegraaf reports.

Anil S. (25) from Amsterdam and Burak A. (23) from Eindhoven were arrested during an anti-terrorism action in Greece on November 28th. According to the newspaper, S. is on the national terrorism list, and both Dutch-Turks are affiliated with left-wing extremist group DHKP-C.

In a statement, the group confirmed on Tuesday that nine of its members, including the two Dutch, were arrested based on "false accusations by AKP fascists of murder on Erdogan".

According to the newspaper, the group planned to attack the Turkish president during a state visit to Greece on December 7th and 8th. The plan was that Erdogan's convoy would be bombarded with rocket-fired grenades, homemade hand-grenades and incendiary bombs from two sides. A third group would strike from behind.

The Greek police are currently searching for the weapons, which are believed to be buried in the vicinity of Athens.

Anil S. was arrested in Turkey in 2015 for participating in a banned demonstration.
