February storm to hit Netherlands today; traffic problems expected
A massive storm is set to hit the Netherlands this afternoon, bringing with it winds of up to 130 kilometers per hour. The windy weather is expected to cause problems with all forms of transport in the country, from motor traffic to planes.
The KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for the entire country. According to the institute gusts of between 75 and 100 km/h can be expected. On the west coast and around the IJsselmeer, winds can reach up to 130 kilometers per hour.
Rijkswaterstaat warns road users to take hazardous conditions due to the wind into account. Traffic service VID warns motorists not to go on the road with empty trailers this afternoon.
NS already announced that fewer trains will be traveling today, to give rail workers more space to deal with incidents quickly. On most routes there will be trains every 30 minutes, instead of every 15.
Schiphol expects flight delays for this afternoon. Travelers are advised to keep an eye on their airline's website for actual travel information before heading to the airport.
Doeksen in Harlingen will have fewer ferries sailing to the islands of Terschelling and Vlieland today, according to the Telegraaf.
