Fleeing suspects injured after crashing into tree

Two suspects in an assault were injured on Sunday morning when they crashed their car into a tree in Baarn while fleeing from the police. Both were taken to hospital under police supervision for treatment, the police said in a statement. Around 6:10 a.m. on Sunday a victim was severely assaulted on Groest in Hilversum. The attackers were seen leaving the scene in a dark-colored Opel Vectra. A short time later, police officers saw the vehicle driving on Den Uylplein in the direction of the A1 highway. The officers signaled the vehicle to stop, but the driver sped off in the direction of Hoevelaken. The police gave chase. On the highway, the suspects turned off the car's lights and increased speed. At Eembrugge the officers saw the suspects take an exit, presumably also at high speed because the car went off the road, hit a light pole and eventually came to a stop against a tree. The car started smoking, so the police removed the two occupants and called in an air ambulance. Both suspects, age 29 and 31 years and both from Renswoude, were taken to the hospital for treatment. The police are investigating the accident and the suspects' involvement in the assault in Hilversum.
