Police tip about “an attack” led to highway shutdown, arrests

Two men were arrested in connection with the fire in a barn in Susteren on Monday. They were threatening to commit an attack. The suspects, a 36-year-old from Heerlenaar and a 31-year-old from Brunssum, were both found in the barn and arrested there. No explosives were found, 1Limburg reports. According to the news site, the police received a phone call from an unidentified man who threatened to commit an attack. A short time later a witness reported hearing two explosions and a fire in the barn on Baakhoven. The threatening phone call came from near the barn. The police immediately launched an investigation and found that one person was present in the dilapidated building in a meadow along the A2. An abandoned car was found nearby. According to 1Limburg, the police received information that the man involved had relationship problems and may harm himself. Bearing in mind that there may be explosives in the barn, the police closed down the A2 highway in both directions and called in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, a SWAT team and a negotiator. Once the police entered the building, they found two men present. Both men were arrested. No explosives were found. As of 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the police have not confirmed the arrests in an official statement.
