Netherlands moves out of peak heat; Regional heatwave may persist in southeast
The Netherlands is exiting an exceptionally hot period marked by tropical temperatures and multiple warm records. One more hot day is expected inland before cooler Atlantic air moves in from the west to northwest, according to Weeronline. The national heatwave is likely to end on Tuesday, although a regional heatwave may continue in parts of the southeast of the Netherlands.
On Sunday, conditions remain humid and hot. Temperatures range from 25°C in the west to 32°C along the eastern border. Most of the day stays dry. However, isolated thunderstorms are possible later in the afternoon in the southeast, especially in Limburg. The highest temperatures occur early in the afternoon. After that, a west wind begins to bring in slightly cooler and drier air. Coastal areas notice this change first. Inland areas stay warm and humid for longer.
By Sunday evening, cooler air spreads further across the country. The period of summer heat becomes shorter than on previous days. By the middle of the evening, summer-like temperatures have disappeared nationwide. Overnight lows fall to between 17°C and 20°C. Conditions remain mild, but the cooling allows homes to be ventilated again.
Monday begins with clearing clouds in the east. A small chance of light rain remains in that region. The rest of the country stays dry. Sunshine and clouds alternate throughout the day. Winds shift to the northwest. This brings in cooler air. Coastal temperatures reach 20°C to 23°C. Inland areas still reach 25°C to locally 28°C. The regional heatwave in the southeast continues.
Tuesday stays dry with a mix of sun and cloud. A weak to moderate northerly wind develops. Coastal temperatures are around 20°C. Central areas reach about 23°C. In the far east and southeast, temperatures may still rise to 25°C to 27°C. Weeronline expects Tuesday to mark the official end of the national heatwave. The regional heatwave in the southeast may continue.
From Wednesday onward, the weather becomes more typical for a Dutch summer. Temperatures are near or slightly above seasonal averages. Coastal areas reach 20°C to 22°C. Central regions see about 23°C to 24°C. The southeast reaches 25°C to 28°C. The regional heatwave may persist there. A few showers are possible. However, dry and sunny periods remain more common.
