Roosendaal mayor rushed to hospital by trauma helicopter after electric bike accident

Mayor Mark Buijs of Roosendaal was seriously injured in an electric bicycle accident near Scharrendijke on Tuesday afternoon. The 57-year-old man was rushed to a nearby hospital by helicopter, Omroep Zeeland reported.

The accident happened on Elkerzeeseweg at around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. It is unclear what happened, only that Buijs fell.

The mayor sustained a head injury in the accident and was hurt badly enough that a trauma team was dispatched from Rotterdam by helicopter. First responders stabilized him at the scene before rushing him to the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam by helicopter.

His current condition is unknown.

According to Omroep Zeeland, Buijs was with his wife at the time of the accident. A police spokesperson told the broadcaster that they believe this was a one-sided accident, but the investigation is ongoing.

The municipality of Roosendaal confirmed that the mayor was in the hospital and will provide more information as soon as more is known, and “it is appropriate to communicate about it.”

“We wish Mark, his wife, their family, relatives, and loved ones much strength and a speedy recovery,” the municipality wrote on its website.

Buijs has been the mayor of Roosendaal since 2024. Before that, he was the mayor of Boxtel and Oosterhout. He is married and has two sons.
