Traffic accidents throughout the Netherlands cost the lives of seven people over the weekend. Two children, both age 7, are in critical condition after being thrown from a car during an accident on the A50 near Ravenstein on Sunday evening.
An air ambulance with an injured person on board was forced to make a detour just before landing in Enschede. A drone was suddenly flying in the helicopter's way. The police called this a life-threatening situation, RTV Oost reports.
The helicopter was on its way to the Medisch Spectrum Twente when a fairly large drone suddenly appeared. "The helicopter had to make a turn in order to land properly and a drone was suddenly flying right there. A collision was only barely prevented", the police said to the broadcaster. It is illegal to fly drones near hospitals.
From Monday it is illegal in the Netherlands to use your smartphone while cycling. Those caught texting while biking will face a fine of 95 euros. The goal of this ban is to increase traffic safety by decreasing distractions.
The ban also applies to using mobile devices while operating other types of vehicles, such as cars, scooters, motorcycles, mobility scooters and trams. Drivers caught texting while using a motorized vehicle face a fine of 240 euros.
Two Dutch women were hit by a car near the Spanish village of Fresno del Camino on Sunday morning. A 63-year-old woman from Utrecht died in hospital. Her 67-year-old friend is in critical condition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to NOS after reports in Spanish media.
The accident happened on the hiking route to the popular pilgrimage town of Santiago de Compostela. The two women were walking through the city of Leon. They were hit by the car at a tunnel near Fresno del Camino, according to the broadcaster.
A Flixbus bus on its way from Munich to Amsterdam collided with a truck in Germany during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Seven people were injured, three of whom seriously. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs can not yet say whether any of the victims are Dutch, RTL Nieuws reports.
A 79-year-old woman was seriously injured in a hit-and-run in Breda on Sunday night. She was hit by a car as she crossed the street. The motorist left the scene of the accident. The police are looking for the perpetrator, and given the severity of the victim's injuries, decided to release surveillance camera footage of the accident.
A serious accident in Eindhoven on Thursday evening left nine people injured, four of whom seriously. Three cars were involved in the collision on the crossing of Anthony van Leeuwenhoeklaan and Marconilaan. All victims were taken to hospital, RTL Nieuws reports
The accident happened at around 6:00 p.m. An eyewitness saw that one car ended up on the wrong side of a road and crashed into a small white truck, according to the broadcaster. The road was littered with rubble and a lamppost was pulled from the ground.
The A73 highway near Venray is currently closed towards Nijmegen as the police investigate "substances" found in a crashed car. The car collided with the guardrail during the early hours of Thursday morning. Two people were injured. The occupants of the car were arrested, NOS reports.
The police noticed the car when it sped past them on the highway at high speed. It crashed a short time later. As far as is known, no other vehicles were involved in the accident. Suspicious substances were found in the car. Exactly what substances these are, is not clear.

A fire truck responding to a wildfire between Baarn and Hilversum, crashed in Baarn on Tuesday. The fire truck collided with a passenger car and landed on its side. A total of five people were hurt, RTL Nieuws reports.
There were two people in the passenger car, and four firefighters in the truck. All four firefighters were taken to hospital, a spokesperson for the fire department said to the broadcaster. One of the people in the passenger car was unhurt, the other was also taken to hospital by ambulance.
Four people died in an accident on the A12 highway near Prins Clausplein in The Hague during the early hours of Wednesday morning. At Ypenburg station, the car carrying the four victims ended up on its side and crashed into a traffic portal, NU.nl reports.
Multiple ambulances as well as a mobile medial team responded to the scene. The A12 was closed in both directions near the Prins Clausplein junction, until around 6:00 a.m. The highway was released after the heavily damaged wreck was removed.
Two of four men killed in a one-sided accident on the A1 highway on Monday morning, played for football club A.V.V. Columbia in Apeldoorn. The club is "shocked and baffled" by their deaths, A.V.V. Columbia said in a statement on their website.
A burning car crashed on the A1 at the Embrugge exit after a high-speed chase from Naarden early on Monday morning. A woman, believed to be the driver of the car, was arrested, AD reports.
The accident happened after a wild chase on the highway. The Amsterdam police noticed the car, a BMW, because it was speeding and swerving wildly across the road. When the driver spotted the police, the car sped up to 250 kilometers per hour and the police gave chase.

A holiday to Sri Lanka ended in tragedy for a family from the Noord-Brabant town of Zevenbergen. The family was involved in a serious traffic accident in Matale. Their 21-year-old son Timo succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night, RTL Nieuws reports.
Loose cows caused multiple accidents on the A73 highway near Oirlo in Limburg early on Friday morning. At least one person was injured in a collision and one cow was put down after being hit by a car, the Limburg police said on Twitter.
The injured person was taken to hospital. Their condition is unknown.
The police warn motorists to be careful when driving in the area. Anyone that suffered material damage as a result of the cows, can report it to the police.
A bus hit a lamppost on Stadshoudersweg in Rotterdam on Wednesday after one of the passengers assaulted the bus driver. It is still unclear why the man attacked the woman driving the bus, the police said. She did not sustain serious injuries. None of the passengers were hurt, RTL Nieuws reports.
According to Rotterdam public transit service RET, the man attacked the driver after he asked her question. "She answered his question and got a slap in the face and a punch in the stomach", a spokesperson said to the broadcaster. "She was so shocked that she hit a lamppost."
A 46-year-old woman and her 7-year-old son were killed in a traffic accident on the N57 near Ouddorp on Thursday afternoon. The car they were in hit a truck head-on. There was also a dog in the car, which did not survive the accident, NU.nl reports.
The accident happened at around 5:15 p.m. The two people in the truck were severely shaken, but unharmed, the police said.
The N57 was closed in both directions for hours due to the police investigation and salvage work. The road opened again at around 9:50 p.m.
The cause of the accident is not yet clear.
A car with four people inside crashed into a tree in the Drenthe town of Hooghalen during the early hours of Sunday morning. A 20-year-old man from Westerbork and a 25-year-old man from Smilde were killed. Two others, a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy both from Westerbork, were seriously injured, the Drenthe police said on Twitter.
The accident happened on Laaghalerveen. The cause of the accident is not yet clear, the police are investigating.
The victims' families were informed.
The police fined 23 motorists on Wednesday afternoon for filming an accident while driving. A fine of 239 euros will soon arrive at their door, NOS reports.
At around noon on Wednesday a truck's trailer collapsed on the Moerdijk Bridge towards Breda due to the strong wind. The truck ended up blocking the road. The accident caused a long traffic jam. Many drivers used the delay to take pictures or video of the accident.
A tank truck sped through an intersection on Jacques Dutilhweg in Rotterdam, crashing into a car and dragging it along. The truck then toppled, landing on the car. A 21-year-old man from Rotterdam, who was in the car, died in the accident, NOS reports.
It is believed that the tank truck came from an exit of the A16 highway. The truck driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The cause of the accident is not yet clear. Eyewitnesses told RTV Rijnmond that it seemed that the truck driver was unable to control the truck.
There were multiple car accidents, including a number of pileups, in Friesland on Thursday morning, likely due to thick fog. At least two people were seriously injured. The A32 highway between Heerenveen and Widrum is currently closed to traffic, with all on-ramps being blocked, NOS reports.
Multiple cars crashed into each other near Wirdum. There were later more accidents and pileups in the traffic jam that resulted from the first pileup.
A tourist was hit by a car on an exit from the A2 in Amsterdam on Tuesday night. The 21-year-old woman was taken to hospital. She was under the influence, NOS reports.
How seriously the tourist was injured is not known, but she was conscious and able to speak to emergency workers, according to the broadcaster. The exit at the Amstel junction was closed for a time for investigation.
