Two people were killed in a car accident on the A12 highway in Zevenaar on Friday morning, the Gelderland police said on Twitter. A third person fled the scene of the accident. The police believe the car involved was used as a getaway car in an ATM bombing in Germany earlier this morning.

The car crashed into the back of a truck at high speed at around 4:30 a.m., Omroep Gelderland reports. The car was not being chased by the police when the accident happened, as previous reports suggested, according to the broadcaster.

One person was killed in a one-sided accident involving a carnival float on Op de Beukel in Meerssen, Limburg on Monday, the police said in a statement. The tractor dragging the float went off the road for unknown reasons.

The accident was reported to the police at around 5:30 p.m. Police officers, the fire brigade, and a number of ambulances were deployed to the scene. First responders tried to resuscitate the driver, but it was to no avail. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

A 19-year-old woman from Neerkant died in hospital on Sunday night, succumbing to injuries sustained in a car accident in Heusden earlier that day. The authorities believe a gust of strong wind, due to storm Dennis, blew the car off the road, after which it struck a tree, police said.

"She was seriously wounded and taken to the hospital. She died there due to her injuries early in the evening," police said in a statement.

Six Dutch people were hurt when their van crashed on the A57 near Goch in Germany on Thursday morning. Three of the victims were seriously hurt, two of which are in critical condition, RTL Nieuws reports.

The accident happened at around 7:00 a.m. on Thursday while the van was trying to overtake a truck. The van hit the truck and ended up on its side, newspaper AD reports.

A helicopter was dispatched to take the injured to hospital. 

The A57 towards Cologne was closed for multiple hours.

A car with Dutch license plates was overturned on the A12 highway near the Belgian village of Zandvliet sometime during the night between Thursday and Friday. The two people in the car died in the crash. Sadly, the crashed car was only noticed after daybreak, RTL Nieuws reports.

"We suspect that [the victims] are Dutch, but that remains to be seen", a spokesperson for the local police said to RTL Nieuws. Police are still confirming their identities.

An NS bus that collided with seven cars and a woman on a cargo bike in Bussum on Wednesday, may have had a technical defect, according to the police's initial findings in the investigation into the fatal accident. The woman on the cargo bike ended up underneath the bus and did not survive the accident. Her child was not hurt, NU.nl reports.

An NS bus crashed into around seven cars and a cargo bike in Bussum, Noord-Holland on Wednesday afternoon. The woman riding the cargo bike became trapped under the bus and died. No one else was injured. The child in the cargo bike was also unhurt, the Gooi en Vechtstreek police said on Twitter.

The accident happened on Comeniuslaan at around 4:35 p.m. The woman killed in the crash came from Naarden. "We wish her loved ones a lot of strength with this loss," the police said.

At midnight the Netherlands rang in 2020 with firework shows in Rotterdam and The Hague, where the thick fog cleared just in time. While Justice Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus said he feared a "wild west party" this New Year's, there were no major incidents. There were, however, a very large number of car fires, especially in The Hague region, and multiple incidents of aid workers and first responders being attacked or harassed, according to various Dutch media.

Extremely thick fog that caused many problems on Dutch roads throughout New Year's Eve is still present in large parts of the Netherlands. Meteorological institute KNMI currently has a code yellow warning in place for the entire country except Zeeland, warning that visibility may be reduced to less than 200 meters in some places. 

"Dangerous driving conditions due to poor visibility," KNMI warned. Road users are advised to drive slowly and keep a safe following distance. "Follow weather reports and warnings."

A man was killed in an accident with a police car in Riethoven, Noord-Brabant during the early hours of Monday morning. He was driving a car stolen from Waalre around 15 minutes before the crash, the Oost-Brabant police said on Twitter.

According to the police, patrolling officers spotted the car in question shortly after receiving a report of the car theft and gave chase. When the police went around a bend on Hobbel, the stolen car was standing stationary in the middle of the road. The police officers could not prevent a collision. This happened at around 1:45 a.m.

Moving scooters and mopeds from bicycle paths to the public roads had a positive effect on both road safety and the flow of traffic, the municipality of Amsterdam said in a press release. Since the scooter ban from bike paths was implemented in April, the number of accidents decreased considerably, the city said.

Over the next 10 years, her Ministry will invest a total of 500 million euros into safer intersections bicycle paths and roads. This investment is desperately needed, according to the Minister. "The number of victims is increasing instead of decreasing", she said in a statement.

Multiple accidents occurred in the Rotterdam region on Monday morning as a result of icy and slippery roads. The accidents caused delays for motorists in the morning rush hour. 

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow slippery roads warning for Gelderland and Noord-Brabant on Monday morning. Travelers' association ANWB warned that Gelderland, Utrecht and Noord-Brabant can expect issues. But the problems extended beyond those provinces.

A man and a woman were killed in an accident on the A50 highway near Heteren early on Tuesday morning. A truck headed towards Eindhoven crashed into the car where the victims sat at about 1 a.m. 

The third person in the car was rushed to an area hospital. Police said he was critically injured in the crash.

Authorities said it in a statement released later in the day that it was unclear if the victims' car was was stopped or moving very slowly. "It is still unknown how this could happen," police said.

Victim Support Netherlands is launching a campaign to reach more victims of road accidents. Research by the organization showed that there are far more traffic victims than the number of people who come to them for help, and that not all road accident victims know that this is an option, NOS reports.

In 2017, the Dutch Association of Insurers recorded more than 740 thousand car insurance damage claims after a collision. Victim Support Netherlands comes into contact with around 30 thousand road accident victims per year.

In the past three years there were over 60 thousand traffic accidents at intersections in the Netherlands. A total of 476 of these accidents proved fatal, and people were injured in nearly 16 thousand accidents, reports RTL Nieuws. The broadcaster conducted its own analysis of police and Rijkswaterstaat data of over 250 thousand road accidents in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

A man responsible for a fatal accident on the A2 highway near Breukelen last month, previously caused at least three other accidents. Two people and the 38-year-old man from Vianen himself were killed in the accident last month. The man suffered from epileptic seizures and his licenses should have been revoked, the newspaper writes.

One person was killed and six people were hurt in an accident on the A73 highway near Nijmegen on Tuesday. At least three people were taken to hospital by ambulance.

The first ambulance was dispatched to the scene just before 9:45 a.m., followed by a trauma team by helicopter a few minutes later. A total of five paramedic teams were sent out, excluding the trauma helicopter. The situation was elevated to a GRIP 1 at 10:03 a.m. - which means that a commanding officer from one of the emergency services took command of the entire scene for all responding agencies.

Three people were killed in an accident on the A2 highway between Bruekelen and Vinkeveen on Thursday afternoon. The victims are a 38-year-old man from Vianen, and a man and woman from Bergen aan Zee, both aged 53, the police confirmed. A fourth victim was taken to hospital. 

The accident happened at around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Three cars were involved in the collision, two of which were completely destroyed, according to newspaper AD. The police believe that one of the cars ended up on the wrong side of the highway, crashing into oncoming traffic.

The number of serious injuries sustained in cycling accidents increased significantly over the past years. Last year 46,800 thousand cyclists had serious injuries treated in an emergency room, 31 percent more than in 2009, according to figures from VeiligheidNL. The safety expertise center mainly attribute the increase to the aging population and electric bikes.

Two teenagers were killed in a two-car accident Monday night that left a third person seriously injured. The crash happened at about 10:30 p.m. on the Mondenweg in Valthermond, Drenthe.

The 18-year-old driver of one vehicle was killed along with his 17-year-old passenger. The young men were from Tweede Exloërmond and Musselkanaal, in Drenthe.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 36-year-old from Ter Apel, was taken to the hospital.

The municipality of Amsterdam is considering using environmental- and mobile cameras to make sure scooters and mopeds stay off the bike paths. The use of cameras can increase the chance of catching scooter riders ignoring the ban. Since the ban was implemented, 3,500 fines and 360 warnings have been issued for scooter and moped riders caught on bike paths, alderman Sharon Dijksma announced, Het Parool reports.

A 23-year-old Uber driver was acquitted on appeal for a traffic accident in which a 22-year-old cyclist was killed in Amsterdam-Oost. The Uber driver hit the young woman with his car on 31 March 2017, after overtaking a stationary city bus, RTL Nieuws reports.
