Police fire shot, arrest stabbing suspect in Sprang-Capelle after high-speed chase
Police fired a shot during the arrest of a suspect in Sprang-Capelle on Saturday afternoon following a high-speed pursuit. The incident is linked to a stabbing in Wijk en Aalburg on Friday evening that left a 29-year-old man seriously injured. Omroep Brabant reported that no one was hurt by the police gunfire.
Authorities identified a suspect in the stabbing case after the attack left the victim with multiple stab wounds and head injuries. Police said the victim’s home was in Veen, but the stabbing occurred in Wijk en Aalburg.
On Saturday, officers spotted a man matching the suspect’s description driving near Sprang-Capelle. When he realized the police were pursuing him, he attempted to flee. His car crashed into a ditch on Spoorbaanweg, and he continued on foot.
Police said a confrontation ensued after they caught up with the suspect, during which "the police felt compelled to fire a shot."
The man was taken into custody at the scene. A spokesperson said it was unclear whether the shot was aimed directly at the suspect or fired as a warning. No one was injured, but an ambulance was dispatched as a precaution. The suspect’s identity has not been released. He is being held on suspicion of attempted manslaughter or murder.
