Fourth explosive on Amsterdam city center street in a week; One arrested
The police found an explosive on Plantage Kerklaan in Amsterdam city center during the early hours of Monday morning and arrested an underage suspect, NH Nieuws reported. This is the fourth incident involving an explosive on the street in six days, after three previous explosions targeting a sandwich shop and two locations of a pizza chain.
The police responded to a report of an explosive on the street at 1:15 a.m. The explosive had not detonated, so no damage was caused, a police spokesperson told NH Nieuws. A teenager was arrested in the area. The police are investigating his involvement.
The Explosive Ordinance Disposal Service (EOD) investigated the explosive and removed it from the scene.
This is the fourth explosive-related incident on Plantage Kerklaan in the heart of Amsterdam in six days. Early Tuesday morning, an explosion caused significant damage to a sandwich shop on the street. And last week, there were two explosions targeting the pizzeria chain De Pizzabakkers. The sandwich shop and pizzeria have different owners, the police confirmed.
After Tuesday’s explosion, the police said they were looking for a man in his twenties in connection with the blasts. It is unclear whether the teenager arrested on Wednesday is this suspect.
The investigation is ongoing.
