Amsterdam shuts four pizza chain locations after multiple explosions

The city of Amsterdam has ordered four branches of De Pizzabakkers to close for six months following a string of explosions, authorities said Friday.

Deputy Mayor Marjolein Moorman said the decision was prompted by repeated attacks on the pizzerias and ongoing fears of additional explosions. “The premises have already been targeted multiple times, and there are concerns about an attack at the Haarlemmerdijk location,” she said.

According to NU.nl, the closures affect two locations on Plantage Kerklaan, one on Overtoom, and one on Haarlemmerdijk. During the shutdown, no one is allowed to enter the premises. The measure is intended to “end the situation that conflicts with public order,” the municipality said.

Since late August, there have been three explosions on Plantage Kerklaan, two of which targeted De Pizzabakkers locations. Another explosion occurred at a sandwich shop.

Last week, police discovered an explosive device on the street and arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with that incident.

In the night from Thursday to Friday, an explosion occurred at a hospitality business on Overtoom, which AT5 reported was also a De Pizzabakkers branch. Authorities said they cannot rule out further attacks, prompting the extended closures.
