72 neglected dogs removed from Friesland farmhouse

The authorities seized 72 neglected dogs from a farmhouse in Friesland on Wednesday, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) reported. According to local media, the dogs were seized from a breeder in Oosterwolde, in the municipality of Oostellingwerf. The mayor closed the property.

The authorities found the dogs following an anonymous tip to the police. According to the NVWA, several dogs were camped together in crates or enclosures, and their living environments were contaminated with urine and feces.

“The air in the house was so severely contaminated with ammonia that colleagues entered wearing respirators,” the authority said.

The NVWA took the dogs to a different location where they will receive appropriate care, at the owner’s expense.

In addition to the NVWA and the police, the fire brigade, the municipal health service GGD, and the municipality were also involved in the operation.
