The Netherlands has too little insight into food safety hazards and food and consumer safety authority NVWA is not equipped to identify and prevent new health risks, the Dutch Safety Board concluded in an investigation launched following the fipronil crisis in the summer of 2017. The Safety Board calls for a more structured approach to food safety to prevent public health hazards, NOS reports.

Some 900 dead pigs were found in a barn in Winterswijk on Thursday morning, the police said on Twitter. The carcasses are being removed and the Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA is investigating.

The pigs were found at a company on Goorweg on the outskirts of Winterswijk, according to Tubantia. The police went to check the barn after a report, according to De Gelderlander. 

How the pigs died is still being investigated. As far as is known, no arrests were made.

A 5-year-old boy was injured when he fell out of a fairground attraction in the Limburg village of Helden on Saturday evening. The boy was hospitalized with a concussion, but was released again on Sunday to continue his recovery at home, the mayor of municipality Peel en Maas, which covers Helden, said to RTL Niuews.

In 2017 a total of 456 restaurants were placed under extra supervision by the Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA because they were not adhering to the rules on hygiene and food safety. That's over 120 more than in 2014, RTL Nieuws reports based on its own research into NVWA inspection reports.

In this way she wants to make dog breeding healthier for the animals involved, ANP reports.

The Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA published the names of 29 hoverboards it considers unsafe. The authority advises consumers to stop using these hover boards with immediate effect. The NVWA knew about the dangers connected to these hover boards since October, but was only able to publish the list now due to "binding deadlines" for the companies involved to object, RTL Nieuws reports.

If the United Kingdom leaves the European Union with no agreement in place, it will cost the Netherlands around 2.3 billion euros up to 2023, the Court of Audit said in a new report published on Monday. This involves extra money for Customs and the Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA, as well as higher contributions to the EU, ANP reports.

Experts warned that the multiplay bouncy houses are dangerous and should be recalled. Over the past summer, at least two children sustained skull fractures after falling from such a bouncy house.

A passerby made a remarkable discovery while jogging in Tienhoven on Sunday morning. He found a lion cub in a small cage in a meadow on Burgemeester Huijdecoperweg. The police believe the young animal was dumped there. They're looking for witnesses.

The Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA is investigating, because they have more experience in this field, the police said on Facebook.

With only six months to go until the United Kingdom leaves the European Union, it is still unclear what negotiations between the EU and the Brits will yield. It is high time that Dutch businesses who deal with the UK start preparing for a hard Brexit - the UK leaving the EU without any trade agreements in place - the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA and employers' organization VNO-NCW warned, NOS reports.

The Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA admitted liability for an accident in December 2015 in which a 4-year-old boy died. Maurycy Biernacki fell from a play set at indoor playground Happy Days in Grootebroek and died a few days later.

The play set did not meet safety requirements. That should have come to light during NVWA inspections, but mistakes were made, a spokesperson said to NOS.

Frozen vegetables that may be contaminated by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes are in circulation in the Netherlands, Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA warns The contaminated vegetables already led to several deaths elsewhere in Europe, RTL Nieuws reports.

This involves frozen vegetables from producer Greenyard's factory in Hungary. According to the NVWA, companies who sell these products must remove them from the shelves and send out warnings if they have already been sold.

A video surfaced showing serious abuses at duck breeding companies in the Netherlands, specifically when the animals are being caught and transported. Animal rights organizations are horrified, RTL Nieuws, who published the video, reports.

The video, made by Animal Rights last winter, shows a young duck being stomped to death, ducks being brutally crammed into crates, and being grabbed by their wings and legs. It also shows two employees throwing a young duck between each other in what seems to be a game.

The Dutch government will spend around 1 billion euros more on IT projects than originally planned, Financieele Dagblad concludes after analyzing 125 recent ICT initiatives by the national government.

The original budget for the analyzed projects was approximately 2.5 billion euros. The expected costs have now risen to 3.5 billion euros, according to the newspaper. On average, the projects are 36 percent over budget. For 22 projects, costs doubled.

Both the Dutch egg sector and the government did not give food safety high enough priority when it came to the fipronil contaminated egg scandal of last year, a committee headed by former Minister Winnie Sorgdrager concluded after investigating the crisis. The previous government also did not properly inform parliament about what was going on, the committee found, ANP reports.

The Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA closed restaurant Kam Yin on Warmoesstraat in Amsterdam after a customer found a cockroach in his soup, AT5 reports.

The customer in question got the soup as a takeaway on Saturday and found the bug when he got home. He posted a photo on Facebook, after which NVWA inspectors visited the restaurant.

The Netherlands is immediately withdrawing from an international committee that gives the tobacco industry advice on measuring nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide in their products, according to newspaper Trouw.

The national institute for public health RIVM and the Dutch food and consumer product safety authority NVWA believe that the tobacco industry has too much influence on the committee, and therefore decided to withdraw. According to the newspaper, eight of the 10 members in the Dutch committee come from the tobacco industry.
