Ten arrested in Scheveningen after social media party call prompts police action
Police in Scheveningen arrested ten individuals Friday evening following renewed unrest along the seaside boulevard, prompted by an online call to gather for a party near the pier, NOS reported.
According to police, the ten people were taken into custody for various offenses, including carrying weapons, failing to present valid identification, and allegedly insulting officers. Law enforcement also acted against general disturbances and nuisance behavior on the boulevard by the sea.
Police presence in Scheveningen had been increased earlier in the evening after a party invitation circulated on social media, urging people to head to the pier. Authorities said the situation on the boulevard was “busy, but manageable,” despite the large crowds.
Friday night’s operation came just weeks after a more serious outbreak of violence in early May, also sparked by a viral social media message. That earlier incident involved a widely shared online call to engage in fighting, which drew hundreds of young people to the area.
The situation escalated rapidly when groups of those present turned against police. In response, the riot police were deployed. Officers came under attack as groups of youths threw stones, bicycles, and glass objects at them.
Police have not indicated whether the individuals arrested on Friday were directly linked to the previous unrest in May. However, authorities reportedly remain on alert due to the continuing use of social media to organize large, and at times violent, gatherings in the coastal district.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or further escalation Friday night beyond the ten arrests, but police emphasized the importance of their preventative deployment, especially following the violent confrontations earlier in the month.
