No trains to or from Rotterdam Centraal this weekend due to signal work

Train service to, from, and through Rotterdam Centraal will be suspended throughout the weekend of May 24 and 25 due to major work on the railway signaling system, according to the Municipality of Rotterdam. The city issued an official warning stating that no trains will operate from, via, or to Rotterdam Centraal, and service on the high-speed line—including Eurostar trains to London and Paris—will also be halted.

The disruption is scheduled to begin at 1 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, and continue through 4:30 a.m. on Monday, May 26. According to the municipality, ProRail will be working during this period to upgrade the train control and safety system between Rotterdam Centraal, Delft Campus, Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, and Barendrecht.

No train traffic will be possible from or through Rotterdam Centraal throughout the work. The maintenance will impact connections between Rotterdam and Delft, Gouda, Zwijndrecht, and Dordrecht. Trains will also not run on the high-speed rail line, which includes the Intercity direct and the Eurostar.

Additional regional reports confirm that no trains will run between Delft and Rotterdam Centraal or between Gouda and Rotterdam Centraal during the works. Travelers departing from Den Haag Hollands Spoor will also be unable to reach Rotterdam by train. The extra travel time for affected routes may increase by up to 45 minutes.

In response to the disruption, Dutch Railways (NS) will operate both express and local replacement buses on certain routes. Passengers can also access portions of the Rotterdam metro and tram network. According to the Municipality of Rotterdam, NS ticket holders will be able to use their travel passes on the metro at several stations, including Rotterdam Centraal, Schiedam Centrum, Beurs, Rotterdam Blaak, Capelsebrug, and Rotterdam Alexander. However, NS tickets will not be valid on Metro Line E between Den Haag Centraal and Rotterdam Centraal.

NS advises passengers to consult the NS Reisplanner before departure and to account for potential delays. The Municipality of Rotterdam also recommends checking the “Rotterdam Bereikbaar” website before traveling, which offers up-to-date information on major infrastructure projects, road closures, and detours across the city.
