Six cyclists injured in Cadzand crash; Driver arrested on suspicion of drunk driving

Six cyclists were injured Saturday evening in the seaside town of Cadzand after a car struck a group of riders on the Vierhonderdpolderdijk. One cyclist was seriously hurt and transported by trauma helicopter to a hospital in Rotterdam. The driver, a woman suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, was arrested at the scene, as reported by RTL.

The crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. on the provincial road. According to police, the impact was so severe that one of the bicycles was snapped in half. The vehicle involved came to a stop off the side of the dike after the collision.

Multiple ambulances responded to the incident. The five other cyclists sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. The identities of both the victims and the suspect have not been made public.

Police administered a breathalyzer test to the driver, which indicated that she was likely over the legal alcohol limit. Authorities confirmed her arrest shortly afterward. "There is no indication that the crash was intentional," police said in a statement. The investigation is ongoing.
