City of Eindhoven asks public to stay away as fans flood city center for PSV game
The city center of Eindhoven is packed as thousands gather to watch PSV’s championship-deciding soccer match on large outdoor screens, city officials said Saturday. Authorities have urged people not to come to the city due to overwhelming crowds.
Thousands of fans have assembled at several key locations, including the Markt, Stadhuisplein, and 18 Septemberplein squares, to watch the match together. Bars along Stratumseind have also set up big outdoor screens to broadcast the game.
“Enormously busy and all viewing spots around the large outdoor screens are completely full,” the municipality said in a statement, asking residents and visitors to avoid traveling to the center.
An ANP correspondent on site reported a festive atmosphere at all locations. Moments before kickoff at Stadhuisplein, fans lit flares and loudly shouted “boeren,” a chant commonly associated with PSV supporters. The crowd erupted in cheers and chants of “Go PSV” as the match began.
PSV only need to defeat Sparta Rotterdam away to win their 26th Eredivisie title in the club's history. If they fail to win and Ajax win then the title will go to Amsterdam.
